Hey all, I appologise if a similar thread has been made, but I tried searching and could not find what I wanted.

So I got a 06 4.2 gu ute, with stock exhaust and stock everything else. The only change i have is diesel/gas system (which did up the power and economy)....

my question is, I 've seen/heard people cutting the muffler from the stock exhaust and getting some better power/noise increase...I am looking to modify my exhaust on the cheap, and so am asking if this does do anything. I am not regarding the legalities of this, as I assume it's illegal.

For those who have done it, does the noise get too loud, or is it just slightly louder?

I have not much cash, so I can't just go buy a 3" system or whatever, just looking to make do with what I have .

thanks

Cutting your muffler out is not illegal, it would be only illegal if its too loud

I run a 3" full system with no mufflers at all, its not too loud, turbos cut heaps of noise down in themselves

You can buy 3" systems for about $600 online

Go to Section 133 on page 118.

133 Silencing device for exhaust systems - A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine must be fitted with a silencing device through which all the exhaust from the engine passes.

Do you think a turbo qualifies as a 'silencing device' on an exhaust with no muffler?

cheers,

NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN. DONT WORRY, THIS CANNOT HARM YOU CAR.

Here is a simple test i want you to do, unbolt the exhaust under the passenger seat, there is a join there with 2 bolts in front of the muffler. . . just undo it from the rest of your exhaust, no need to cut anything, zippy tie it(the back half of your exhaust) up securely outta the way and drive around the block. . . . . . YOU WONT GO BACK.

haha thanks, will def try tomorrow. Might sound stupid, but after I try it (I assume it will sound great) and I like it, do I just leave the back half of the exhaust hanging with zippys? surely not? or is it just a test and if I like it I cut the muffler then?

Cause wouldn't the zippy ties break over time or something and just be bouncing around ?

I have done this on many different patrols.
It cost me $30 the last time to have an exhaust shop cut the muffler out and replace with straight pipe.
On another patrol i had a section of 2.5 inch made up to replace the whole middle section flange to flange. Cost $100 and made a difference to both power and noise. No it wasn't too loud. You'll love it.
Do it.

seriously, can you knock the stuffing out without opening up the converter casing? Also, given that previous posts seem to suggest that cats were fitted to Aus ZD30's to comply to Euro Emissions standards, would you expect a ZD30 to pass roadworthy in Aus without a cat fitted?? This is the really important question imo:)

AceBlueheeler, You obviously have to have the exhaust system secured and not leaking or exhausting under the vehicle. Shove it back together and take it to an exhaust shop, get them to remove the muffler and replace it with a straight piece of pipe with bolt on flanges, bring the muffler back home with you in case you need to put it back at some stage!! Can you empty without cutting the casing?

Yes you can.
It is illegal.
Theoretically you would need to cut off the bottom bend with a hacksaw ( you would mark it with a scribe so you could weld it back correctly later). Hypothetically you could then take a big screwdriver or broom handle if you like and smash out all that restrictive honeycomb crap out. It will probably take a while.
Then you could probably take it to an exhaust bloke and for around $20 I'm sure he would weld the bend back on and a 1/8 npt nipple for an egt probe.
In practise this will effect your performance and cause overboost.
Again, this is illegal - however
I would imagine this will still pass a roadworthy.
I've never seen a tester take emissions readings.
BTW you can buy a cat-less system for a zd30 from scotts rods 'for off-road race use only'.
