hi guys,

i saw a very fresh surplus transmission at the surplus shop two days ago and decided to get it. here is how it looks

according to the owner of the shop. it was mated with a tb4.2. i don't know it that's true. but can anyone confirm that this bell housing is the pattern for the tb4.2? cuz if it is. i'll keep it and will be my bell housing if and when i decide to upgrade to a td4.2....hehehe

in addition. the transmission came with a rear pto.

i don't have any use for it. but just left if cuz it would be a hassle to remove all the gearing components inside the transfer case.

and lastly, does anyone know why there are hoses sticking out of the transfer case cover? and what it's for?

i suspect its a cooler or a heater. but i'm not sure. thanks for the help.

BTW, because it came from a gas engine. the main drive is longer than my original maindrive so we have to machine down the maindrive. hopefully, the my mechanic will be able to finish installing the new transmission before lunch.\

as for the gear ratio. 2nd, 3r, 4rth and 5th gears are the same for both. the first gear ratio of my new trans is 3.5 while my old trans is 3.8. will there be a significant difference?

thanks for your inputs:D

This tranny came from a fire truck. Only fire trucks came with a rear PTO. When Nissan came with the Y60/GQ they started the make a mix of MK and GQ fire trucks. The had the MK frame and gearbox but with a TB42 engine, GQ dash and GQ look a like front.

1988 NISSAN SAFARI PATROL FIRE TRUCK WITH PTO PUMP 4X4 (eBay item 280582751614 end time 28-Nov-10 21:18:39 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

Check the VIN plate, it says TB42 and our MK gearbox model.

Wanna sell the rear PTO?

thanks for the helpfull info. i'll be interested to sell the rear pto. do you have a diagram of how to remove the of the pto inside the transfercase?

so, is this a SD33/T gearbox, with a TD42 bell-house?
the gearbox in all 160 are very similar, some have different ratios and the input shaft comes 3 different lengths (suit l28 or p40/sd33 or p40/sd33t im pretty sure) and the sticks come in different positions. he mentions the input shaft needed machining down, indicating its the long l28 type. but this bellhousing will bolt up to any manual gearbox in a 160.

anyone know if tb bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as td? could get some new ones cast for easier td42 (turbo or your wasting your time) conversions.

Exactly where I was going with this:punkrock: Although, having read into the TD42 manual, I'm not sure if it's a better engine?!? It also seems VERY thirsty...

yer people have mentioned they prefered a nice sd33t over a na td42, but im sure a well boosted td42 would be even better again.

sounds like its been installed, but if not can you pull the cover off the transfer and take a photo?
you sure its 3.5 first gear, the 5 speeds in 160s are ~4.0 and 4.2 afaik, 4 speed is 3.8 as you mention.

interesting info there too jelmer!
sorry but the tranny has been installed. to determined the ratio of the first gear. i did an actual test on the tranny itself and did the same on my old tranny. so i'm sure its 3.5. i also double check on my service manual.

maybe nissan made this ratio specifically for the firetruck.

i was told that the block of the tb42 and the td42 are the same. so they should have the same bolt pattern.

this is a pic of the tranny with the main drive shaft

here is a pic of the same drive shaft machined down. and you will notice that the bell housing is very different form the bellhousing that came with the tranny.

after the tranny was installed. i was having some clutch issues. could not figure out what was wrong. so i decided to bring it to a shop near our house. they took down the tranny and after doing some measurements. they discovered that the a portion of the spline needed to be machined down. so it was sent to the machine shop again.

while it was down. i had a chance to check the flywheel. and discovered that the surface was not even (difference of 1mm from the inner and outer portion). so i had it sent to the machine shop for re surfacing. this was the reason why the clutch would drag and the clutch plate did not have even wear. here is a pic of the old clutch

hopefully, everything will be installed by thursday. i also asked them to check if they could remove the rear pto.
