Answering some questions about the turbo used for the 4.5 engine:
HE221Wg good for 300 to 350 HP and very fast respond, provide instant low down torque, HE221 ( identical looking as the HE221Wg) only good for 180HP or even less. normally found in industry machine. Hx30 (look bigger in size,) not suitable for the isde4.5 due to slow respond at lower RPM ( dyno shows) it wont produce enough boost when needed at the lower RPM. So the lower end torque is not good compared to the HE221w 4.5, however some people try to change the fuel ratio to make it have more boost at lower rpm. It is also cheaper than HE221W. HE250, this is a bigger turbo, reason fast response at the low rpm, and provide lots more boost at the top end. So the military 4.5 is using this one to have more power. I tried to evaluated this turbo, but found out it is too big, and need to change quiet few parts, the engine is also need to be lowered which will affect the drive shaft angle. So eventually gave up this idea. There is label on the turbo, you can clean it then see what turbo you have. In the past 2 years, tested all of these options. the HE221W is the best turbo for our engine. learn new things every day!

Support Australia company, give this oil a try. The spec shows at both cold and hot temperature, it performance better than many others.

tested drive today with this new oil. Excellent! the oil pressure in different RPM range is spot on! It is also Cummins Approved.

31,500km RE4 update:
1) Car total KM: 176,500km
2) Re4 behind Cummins: 31,500km
3) Current Inline filter : 14,500km
The Re4 has done a good job so far. This time, I did not open the sump, instead, Just cut open the inline filter ( which supposed to be changed every 20,000km). Today I cut it open to take a close look. The filter element looks pretty good, and the magnet also shows very little debris for the KM travelled. See the attached photos. You can get the filer from ebay. dont use those 'rebuildable' one - leaking. Only use fully sealed unit.

Great thread @patrol97! I just read it end to end (whew). thanks for sharing the journey and interesting improvements and learning along the way.
Hats off to your impressive effort and result.
You have any Perth or WA ISDE4.5 conversions - either as engines sold by you or independently?

After a 14,088km, 5 weeks Sydney to WA trip. We finally arrived home. The 4.5 Cummins patrol towing the caravan with easy throughout the journey. Just checked the engine oil , see the attached picture. It still looks like new after 14,088km trip. Cummins specify to change engine oil every 30,000km, and I normally change the oil and filter every 15,000km. But this time I will keep it for another 6,000km till the end of ski season.

Update of the 1st fuel filter change: this is the pre-filter ( ZD30) change after 50,000km. A bit over due since we had the big WA trip. Basically the ZD30 filter used as a Pre-filter which to be replaced in every 40,000km per Nissan's service manual, then the Cummins's fuel filter get changed after 80,000km. See the attached photos, the ZD30's filter worked as expected. I will change the pre-filter (ZD30) and Cummins fuel filter in about another 30,000km.

RE4 inline filter 17, 000km replacement and inspection. Looks pretty clean. The RE4 has been doing good job behind the Cummins for just over 50,000km now. Next time, I will replace it at 20,000km.

this filter has a built in pressure release valve, in case of the filter element get blocked, the valve will open. I tried to press the valve, does not need much pressure to open it. So it is pretty safe to install it.

Answering some questions about my RE4's stage 3 HD valve body ( built by Keas): the first photo, left side: the factory valve body, right side : stage 3 valve body ( less pipes). On the top of the photo, all those pistons and springs were removed. In the 2nd photo, factory setup, 3rd photo, in the transmission, stage 3 setup with left two holes blocked. This stage 3 HD valve setup together with custom TCU ( see the settings) allow the transmission shift very firm. The TCU allow me to setup the line pressure at each Throat position. This is very important given the fact that the Cummins engine produce very high torque at low rpm ( at 1200rpm, 650nm, then 1500 to 1900 about 800nm) I believe this is the main reason my RE4 has been working fine after 50,000km behind the high torque Cummins engine. If you want to build a strong RE4 (even not for the Cummins), this setup is a very good option. My next step, will be looking at a good low stall TC. Meantime, I keep the TC locked most of the time. The factory TC lockup clutch is much stronger than I expected. I was told, it can hold up to 750nm before start slippering. I have never tried its limit. But I have increased the TPs locking from the initial 50% to 73%. Once I have change it to a dual clutch locking low stall TC, I will be able to keep the lockup to 85%.

To help people fully understand how to connect their ECM / Harness/ Electrical parts for the 4.5. This is a professionally made OEM quality harness system to allow fully operational of this engine including cruise control system, CANbus display, etc. Note, if you connect the ECM via relay, then wait for 5 seconds before start - ECM need to boot up. Answer some questions about my 4.5 setup. For my 4.5 , I use a 100 A relay to connect the ECM. So each time when I start the car, it is a fresh boot up for the ECM. My ECM does not have time to write down code to the memory when I shut down, but I have a CANbus display unit which shows any err message. Just like a PC, the advantage of a fresh boot up can clear some unexpected system malfunction. Remember back to ZD30, people try to discount the battery for more than 30 seconds to clear some strange fault. It is up to individual's own preference to setup the connection.

I have done filter and sump today. see the picture. looks pretty good. Key info: the RE4 has done just under 200,000km. Behind the Cummins it has done 53,000km. The sump in the photo is after 40,000km driven. the ATF changed is also look like new! The Re4 is doing very well. Still strong and drive like new. I am very happy!

hey Spring, i'm doing a 6BT. Have been following you on facebook and chatted to you there a few times (I'm Tim Eastwood) about the RE4, although I ended up going a 4L80E. Love the build thread, nice work! Glad to hear the RE4 is serving you well, they are a strong box
