Afternoon gents.

Took the Patrol for a cruise today as haven't been using her much these last few months, just around town, no big trips since Xmas anyway.

About 1hr into motorway driving today however, a noise started which seems to be coming from the passenger side...can hear it inside the car and its sort of an annoying flapping sort of noise...like something caught in a fan maybe. Hard to explain the noise.

Tried fiddling with the AC direction control and whatnot to no avail. Happens when accelerating but not all the time...prbly mid range and under load usually as in going up hill.

Never heard this noise before so it's definitely new. Have managed to stop the AC rattle by using the direction knob so this is definitely a new and different noise.

What can I check or can I post anything else here to help identify it maybe? I'll likely have to take it to the mechanic anyway as if it's anything complicated like turbo or intercooler bracket then it's out of my skills range.

It doesn't appear to affect power or anything.

Oh and I'm coming up to 275,000kms on a 2009 GU so it's not been a bad run! :)

Cheers.

Do you have a snorkel and is it attached to the A pillar? If so are the securing screws tight? I chased an annoying buzz at certain revs for months, finished up being that, it sounded like it was coming from the firewall, but it wasn't. The issue is vibration noises can transfer through the body and sound like they come from somewhere else. So consider all possibilities.

Thanks Geeyou. I have just had a good shake of everything and it could possibly be those 2 screws you know...how do I go about tightening them? Do I have to take the top part of the snorkel off or something? Otherwise they are under the snorkel. Or a very small 90 degree screwdriver?

Not sure exactly how yours is secured but I have a 90 degree ratchet screwdriver, I removed the screws and flexed the snorkel to squeeze some silicone filler into the retainer, then went up a size in the diameter of the screws.
Hope that is all it is.

Awesome thank you so much...I'll check it out tomorrow and see what I can do. Plus the mossies are out in force now so I've retreated inside haha :)

Thanks again for your kind and expert advice. Much appreciated.

Ha funny you say that. I've been putting up with a buzzing/vibration for months coming from passenger side at highway speeds. Ended up being the window wind deflector plastic thingamabob over all my windows. The glue after 20 years has loosened up and the end started resonating.

Haha...I wish it was that! Alas I don't have one of the plastic wind thingies.

I'm still trying to locate the noise. Only happens around 2500 rpm and possibly central dashboard behind the stereo...not sure. My gf doesn't drive so can't even be a passenger and try to locate it... makes it even harder!

I tried tightening up the 2 snorkel screws on the A pillar outside and even they needed tightening the noise is still present so it wasn't that.

This could be worth a try_ remove center console shroud that surrounds heater / fan controls and radio head unit (remove the 2 screws @ bottom of console and remove it by locating your fingers in the top console recess and firmly pull back towards you). This provides reasonable access to side of the vent flap linkages
Can remove radio for improved access . Go for a drive, load engine slightly to where you experience the noise, then with care while watching the road, place your hand / fingers against the various vent flap linkages and see if noise stops.
My 08 GU CRD some year ago had a buzz noise start up when engine was a under slight load, between 2200 - 2500 RPM. The noise started just after Nissan replaced the passenger air bags, so a good excuse to have Nissan remove dash (twice) to try and find cause of noise, which proved to be a big waste of time. Then I did above exercise and found that one flap linkage/pivot point had play that caused the noise.
I applied some grease to all linkage pivot points and noise ceased and has not returned (now approx 150,000kms). Grease and possible component wear/"bedding in" had solved this problem.

Temperature impacted as well.

I also sanded back the vanes on fan unit as they occasionally rubbed against its housing.

Nice one thanks mate. I was out earlier this evening and trying to isolate a few things. It only happens between 2200 and 2500, like yours did, and usually only when up hill. Gf thinks its louder outside the car rather than in but I'm not so sure. Feels like it's coming from centre firewall to me so what you suggested about taking the stereo out and feeling for any play in the vent links might be worth a try.

Check that your intercooler frame is securely bolted to the firewall, front radiator support panel and also cooler to its frame.

Elimination is the game.

Damn I hope I can find it! Mine has had its fair share of rough roads but what I find weird is it just suddenly started on the motorway last weekend! Haven't been anywhere off road for a few months.

Have found a possible culprit today..both front wheel arches have a flap that's missing a clip so I'll cable tie them up and test however I'm not sure that's gonna be it because the noise is now confirmed to be left hand side only...even though when in the car with windows up it sounds like behind the passenger dash.

Also took centre part of dash out and had a feel around but nothing loose and it did confirm the noise is from left side of car outside.

Oh and also found about a foot long crack in the dash right behind the vents that are closest to the windscreen. Never noticed it before and wondering if it might be that...but gf is adamant its from her side.

Will report back.

Mine kinda started after nissan ripped the dash apart for that Takata airbag recall. Coincidence I'm not sure. Maybe look on the firewall for anything vibrating rattling etc even window wipers so many things it could be its very frustrating!!!

Thanks mate I will do. Checked and nipped up intercooler mounting nuts this morning and also cable tied up the plastic Nissan grill a bit tighter.

Hadn't thought about windscreen wipers but will check them also.

Firewall is so bloody hard esp when it's only me that drives.

Thanks for your tips. Much appreciated.

So I'm missing quite a few of those clips with the flat round head. The ones that keep the wheel arch pinned into place. Unfortunately the holes don't allow for a cable tie to go through (no exit point I can grab the cable tie).

Does anyone know what those clips are called and where I can buy them please?

Hoping it might be the wheel arches but not betting the farm on it as both driver side and passenger side are missing a few! And this noise only seems to be coming from the centre left.
