Hi all, been asking lots of questions and really appreciate the responses.
Had the new Patrol a couple of weeks and is lovely to drive. It has so much more torque than the 4.8 I previously had. My question is am I better to have it in 7th and have it lug away at 1500-1600rpm up hills etc. (which it does btw) or is it best to drop a gear or two?
What is best for fuel usage and long life?
Been getting about 13.5 - 14.2l/100klm just traveling like I would in the previous 4.8 so better economy with lots more power to boot if needed. Will become a bit of a tow rig for the boat and camper/caravan. Has about 1100klms on it so far.

Hi Bruce
We use a "Scan Gauge"
I suggest you get one and set it up above the steering wheel
When you do you can look at the LOD info I use 60% to 65% as the maximum LOD for flat road and 80% to 85% LOD for up hill if the LOD is above these figures I change down .
Using this I find I get the same fuel figures for highway cruising and off road 4WD driving.
My set up is about 4T when on a trip and 2.8T MT around town.
Hope this helps
Joe

I know how you feel Bruce they are just great to drive. We tow 2.5t van with ours and it returns slightly better economy than the 4.8. maintaining 100kph on the highway and 110 in the 110 zones we are using 22l/100. I use 6th mainly and manually change.I don't like to get below 2000rpm.Without the van I use it in auto mode, and figures are typically the same as yours. When we left home last week we travelled for a couple of hundred kms around 80km/hr with some stop starts due to road construction on the Pacific Hwy and returned 25l/100. A small price to pay for comfort and capability. Ian

Notorious benny posted a while back that when towing up a grade the engine fuel flow was lower in a lower gear, higher rpm and part throttle than it was lugging in a higher hear at full throttle at low rpm. This is probably thanks to the VVEL DIG.

I agree with Ian above, avoid letting the rpm get much below 2000 going up hill under load.

Thanks for your input.

JoeG thanks for the reference to the gauge, will look into the scangauge and ultragauge. They don't list the Y62 on their compatibility lists so will email them and see what they say. Would be quite useful, auto trans temp would be something I'd love to monitor of course but will have to see what response I receive.

Piston1 interesting user experience and note the 2000rpm and 6th gear, think that will become my towing style also. Lots of hills and twisty bits getting to where we launch our boat at Eildon, a few months to go before I need to worry about it tho but best to use the time to try a few things out.

Sheikshifter thanks for your reply, did a lot of searching/reading and found what you referred to. Interesting that shifting down a gear (ie more revs) uses less fuel according to the readout info as long as I guess the foot on the pedal comes off slightly. On the dash there is a screen between the gauges that shows average klms/litre and a "real time" bar gauge of wether you're over/under that average, perhaps I'll use this when going up a hill and experiment with the gear selection to see if it makes much of a change in the meantime.

Thanks again, comments and assistance much appreciated.

Yeah there's a pretty big smile on my face too, cruises real nice on Eastlink. Have to use Cruise control cause the dam thing keeps pulling away in 7th @100k's will get a speeding ticket for sure if I'm not careful with that one. Up hills I love the subtle loading up and the noise coming from the rear in 7th. Just wanted to know what other folk do when towing, I'm sure with 2.8t will slow it down a bit but don't want to bust the tranny leaving in too tall a gear or put un-necessary load on the motor than needs be. Lets face it the boats 5.7 Chev Indmar burns 37l in 20mins at 90kph on the water when doing 4800rpm so it puts things into perspective. The 4.8 towed the boat OK but when it came to hills it would die pretty quick, sure kick it down and it'd scream away but it didn't feel comfortable doing that often.
Well another round trip today and 13.8l/100k's, hills freeways and windy roads, cheaper than the 4.8 and more power when needed.
Better start putting the electric brake controller together.......

First country drive from Melb to Bendigo, 13.15 L/100 working on the reported 7.6klm per litre reported. Didn't baby it but kept to the speed limit according to gps unit I used. Just travels along without effort and arrived quite relaxed. Cheers BruceR.

Bit more of an update.
Had a job in Port Melb today, so down to Burwood Hwy and eventually onto the Sth Eastern (torture test for my patience), returned via the Eastern. Approx 190k round trip and calc fuel usage 14.2l/h. I'm happy. Didn't floor it everywhere, but kept up to the traffic both Hwy and City easily.
Up a particular lengthy hill I've lugged it up in 7th @80k/hr and another time just let the auto do its thing. Lost kays on range indicator were 26 and 21 respectively. Next time I'll try going up in 5th and see what the result is. Will be interesting to see how it handles having a 2.8T boat hooked up to the rear soon.

Thanks Kerry 066, will take a look at that.
Old habits take a while to die, or more likely this old dog is slow to learn new tricks. Keep wanting to turn the car off with a key in my hands, sometimes caught myself reaching for the handbrake.

Hi, I have a new Y62 Series2 and need to get a towbar fitted. Was looking at putting a Hayman Reece on but am concerned about the cut outs required. The suppliers/fitters don't seem to be able to shed much light as they haven't fitted any yet. An a little apprehensive to order one until I know What it looks like fitted. Can anyone post some photos of a Hayman and also genuine Nissan fitted? Any tips/issues to watch out for. Cheers.

Hey Tombo, congrats on the Y62.
Had the dealer fit the Hayman Reece towbar, asked that they use the Nissan genuine wiring kit though as it is kinda plug n play rather than tapping into the existing wiring thru those horrid connectors usually used.
As far as cutouts, they cut a section of the lower rear bumper, bout 2ft length in all. Then placed a moulding around the cut edge left to make it all neat and tidy.
Dunno if that helps at all.

I have a 6.1 meter plate boat I tow behind mine. I don't drive it any different with the boat on than normal. It's 320 Klm round trip speed limit in NT is 130, I normal sit between 110 and 120. I go through a tank of fuel with about 100 kms to go on the warning light. Talking to another guy he told me that when he tows he is only getting 350klms out of a tank.

The fuel sounds about right mate from what I understand on reserve. On fuel with 0km on dash you still have close to 35-40L left
Based on worst case of 35L and last 100km on worst of 25L/100km means you used around 80L of fuel from your 140L
On an online calculator 320km using 80L = 25l/100 on worst case. Not bad at all :)

The other guy may not realize that at 0 there is still a good 35-40L left as 350k on 140L is like a whopping 40L/100 :-0
