Hey guys, whilst driving there is a whooshing noise when the turbo is at boost, wondering if this is normal or it could be a gasket problem, I have already had the intercooler off and all the pipes so all the pipes are in good condition and all tight. There may be a small leak in the intercooler but the sound is coming from the passenger side. So far from what I have searched it could be exhaust manifold gasket, turbo to dump pipe gasket or the manifold side of the egr pipe. Because it's only there whilst at boost (boost gauge fitted) it seems it may be turbo to exhaust gasket but I'm not sure welcome to any helpfull suggestions, thanks in advance Jay.

Get it running and with a spray bottle of soapy water, gently squirt seperate areas with it around gasket/flanges, it will bubble if air is leaking. Do the exhaust before it gets too hot.

Hi Jay I have been getting a whistle as the turbo is at boost.
It has been thoroughly checked out (by a specialist) and it just seems to be an airflow noise through the turbo and intercooler. No leaks, no play in the turbo bearing, new intercooler, replaced pipe clamps, checked everything but it still whistles at 10 to 18 psi and still goes well.

80,000km since it started whistling an no other problems yet. I have got used to it now.

I have the same "problem". Is sounds like air gushing through the bonnet and into the cabin.
I have a new intercooler and all clamps are tight. Maybe it is a gasket?

No it's all the time
If it is not too loud and there all the time I would think it was the sound of the turbo spooling up and pushing a heap of air.
If it sounds like a slipping fan belt gone mad then its a gasket.
The Nissan gaskets are multi layer stainless steel items that are perfect whistles they fail. Just like a reed on a flute etc.
When they first fail. The noise will go away once it gets hot and expands. After a while it will be noisy all the time.

i have only heard a spooling noise since i had my snorkel installed. thought it was the turbo spooling up and after i installed my boost gauge it confirmed, it only does it whilst on boost 9-10 psi and over

G'day Jay, did you ever find out what the whooshing sound was.

I am looking at buying a GU patrol and have test driven a few, but come across this whooshing noise today, as you described it only occurs around boost ie 2000 rpm, the dealer claims all is ok however the other vehicles i have driven do not make this noise. I don't want to buy a motor that is already overboosting and about to blow a hose or worse still stuff the turbo or head. Should i stay clear of this Patrol.

Cheers
