Hi Canadian Forum,

Just a quick thread: I be flying into Edmonton on the 4th of Dec till the 23rd of Dec 2010.

My question is to Canadian 4x4 forum is
1) Will I need a 4x4 or will a normal car be ok during this time of year. I had planned to get away at the weekend and have a look around and get to know the area a little better.
2) 4x4 pick up or a Toyota LandCruiser are these available to rent
3) Also if you can advise me on any places I should visit in this area at night (nightlife)
4) Places to visit at the weekends.

Regards, dan (oilrig6)

If anyone is this area I be happy to meet up and say hi !

Hi Dan, how did you get stuck with that flight schedule? I used to transit to Central Africa through Europe on a 6 week cycle, hated that except we were world business class.

AFAIK you will not be able to rent anything you'll be happy with but you can get stock North American 4x4 and even offroad insurance. I was born in Edmonton but left at the age of 2. Personally I would not rent a car, it could jest be moderately cold or it could snow.....

Consider going into Jasper or Banff if you can spare the time. I'm sure Canuck will have a few suggestions when he wakes up on the west coast.

Cheers,
Paul

Hey Dan. Two words - El Nin~o - mean it is likely to be very cold and snowy in Western Canada this year. -30 to -40C is not unheard of for Edmonton that time of year. In fact, an Arctic cold front will be heading that way later this week to give them their first taste of winter. As Twinotter600 says, your selection will be limited to north American Market 4x4s. The Jeep will likely be your best bet for a 4WD. You would do fine with an AWD also. Problem with most rental places is they do not change their tires over to winter tires. Some will do it if you pay extra. It is worth it to pay extra if you are going to be doing a lot of extra snow/ice driving.

Weatherford has me all over the world at the moment with final place to call in is Edmonton. I see if they can help me book any 4x4 or AWD. I'm not bothered what it is as long as its got a good heater and some where to place a hot cup of coffee. At the weekend I plan to have a look around for several reasons just to experience a country and the lifestyle. It's been a hard trip so far that's taking me around the world anti clockwise and getting home on Christmas eve. It's part of the company relocation plan to south Africa in Jan 2011.
