I think the culture of the internet has changed somewhat. People are more and more time poor (and have shorter attention spans) since the introduction of smartphones.

Where Facebook does shine over a forum is (as long as the advice is from a reliable source) is the instant fix to a problem. "Hi, I'm stuck on the side of the road, my car is doing x." You'll often see many messages under a post such as this from what seem to be informed sources helping to diagnose a problem.

What it's less good at is technical dives and information sharing. Posts get created and then buried- it's also much harder to find information. Speaking personally I owned my GU for quite some time before registering on this forum but I'd been a "ghost" for months as the amount of available knowledge through posts created years ago was so extensive- I never felt the need to create posts because every time I had a question or a problem someone else had experienced the same thing and the solution had been thought out and documented.

its a diesel forum rosco.
petrol has been the hated other family member since forever whether you think so or not.
not a single person on here during the early 62 days thought they were any good as they were all die hard diesel nobs and couldnt accept change or the 62 being superior in just about every way, hence why the crapbook fraternity took over with some actually very clever and knowledgeable guys which paved the way more moving forward.
dont get me wrong, its flooded with flogs these days, maybe even more so than the forum some how considering what a flog bunch is still brain washed on here.
in any case, the forum has been good, just a shame heads are buried.
Anyone that is getting too emotional about what flavor of dinosaur juice their car eats is probably not entirely stable.

For what it's worth for someone complaining about others throwing shade around you're sure doing a bit of it yourself.

The VK56 is probably the first really good engine that Nissan ever put into a Patrol. I don't think any of the others have ever been worth getting excited about. The TB48 was probably the pick of the bunch and even it's not that great in stock form.

If Nissan could have had something on par with a 12ht/1hdt/ FT/ FTE/ 2UZ it'd be a different story in the GU.

Modern small displacement common rails have for the most part traded away the advantages that the older mechanically injected diesels had over petrols: They are more complicated, have more electronics and have higher ongoing maintenance costs.

Yes possibly but we have Y62 members who have had issues and as said earlier have been told to go to the Facebook page instead of giving them feedback here, that action alone leads me to think that person has an elitist attitude. 4.8's don't have issues either but we have a reasonable knowledge base on them. Some, like me, like to play with things on their Patrol, engine, suspension, transmission, interior and we build up a knowledge base on mods all over our vehicles, does this not happen with the Y62?
Probably fair to say as well that newer cars are getting harder and harder to modify than the old ones. The single biggest reason for me buying a Nissan (born and bred Tojo lover) was that the Y61 was new enough to have the safety features I wanted but old enough to be able to modify- It's a great platform for people who want to tinker with their car.

HZJ105, HZJ78 and HZJ79 had the weaker R-series gearbox. HZJ80 and HZJ70-75 were OK.

1HZ-T (rare as hen's teeth, never fitted to Blandcruisers) were ok. 1HZ + aftermarket turbo can be dangerous if you get greedy chasing extra grunt.

*Did a bit of reading, I was sure that Tojo never did a 1HZ-T but apparently they put them in some coaster buses in europe before the adoption of the 1HD-T. This must have been for a vanishingly small window as the 1HZ and 1HD-T were introduced at about the same time, at least in a cruiser.

One of the reasons that all the Tojo turbos were better than the TD's was that they all had direct injection. The 1HZ is indirect injection (like a TD) which makes it less suitable for turbocharging- The latter FT/FTE's are also 24 valve and are just overall so much better designed and built than a TD.

One of the things that really sh!ts me about Nissan is how untidy and difficult it is to work on their engines. Pop the bonnet of a Landcruiser and everything is well set out, easy to service or remove if required- right down to the removable radiator support panel. Nissan took the view everything could be held together with 300 sheet metal brackets.
