The watery black junk can't really be avoided completely - although frequent shorter trips will lead to it building up.
EGTs on idle aren't enough to clear out the exhaust (in fact it'll probably get worse) - almost like the DPF regen runs for newer diesel vehicles, you need that higher RPM higher load/temp situation to really dry things out in there (e.g. a 10-15min freeway run).
Winter will be worse, as it will be if where you live gets cool and humid for any significant length of time.
