if u cut the wire that take it to half way then ur antenna will stay up full time. as for dvd it depends on how much money you want to spend, i work for an alpine specialist dealer so my recomendation would be alpine obviously lol, and alpine dvd, nav, bluetooth, rev cam, ipod, iphone, system would be around the 2k mark. i myself am selling the girlfriends iva-w502 and kce-400bt bluetooth and dvd kit out of our corolla for $1300, its 4 months old. we are upgrading to the new iva w520, btooth, nav, etc.

looks like u will be doing my power antenna switch mod then,
The aerial (and the wiring) on my GQ was missing when I bought it, and I've managed to find an aftermarket electric aerial to install. The aftermarket unit (Aerpro) has a power, and earth and a green trigger wire. I have the aerial control switch on the dashboard.

Is it possible to mod the Aerpro unit to allow me to be able to control the height, either with the factory switch or with an aftermarket one?

very good question. now. depending on what aerpro antenna u got will depend on wether it will run with the height control. im not 100% sure on the aerpro gq/gu antennas but i know for a fact that you can buy a semi auto antenna for falcons etc which have full height control (basically u set it where u want it) if the antenna only has red black and green id be guessing that the height control wont work unfortunately. if it was to work it would run a minimum of 4 wires. HOWEVER!! i recons i could make a switch up that would let u run half or full height ;)

It's an AP10. It's made for a VB-VL Commodore with a few different head kits to suit other applications. It is a fully automatic model, though.

My main concern is being able to lower the aerial when I need it to avoid damage. I'm assuming that this switch you could make would be a little beyond my abilities, but I was wondering if there'd be a solution that I could figure out.

I'm assuming that activating the trigger wire is what raises the aerial, while cutting power to it would lower it. Could I wire in a simple on-off toggle switch to the trigger wire, so that I could at least cut power to the trigger and lower the aerial when I need to without turning off the head unit?

(I should add that I haven't installed the head unit yet. I'm assuming that the aerial will stay up when the stereo is on, even if I'm playing a CD or using an MP3 player. Obviously, if the aerial retracts when the stereo is playing a CD, then it wouldn't be necessary.)

yeah u can alsways just but an on off switch on the green wire and that will allow u to hav it up or down wenever needed. the setup i was talking about was height controlling.
