Hi All,
I have previously posted a thread on installing an aftermarket headunit into a patrol and i got a fair response as to the antenna trigger for the power antenna.

If you buy a pioneer cd player or European model players it will MOST likely NOT have an antenna trigger wire or it will trigger constantly, so to counter this you need to either wire the antenna trigger to acc or remote trigger from the headunit to get it to work. i have worked out how to get these sort of systems to work using a DPDT (dual pole dual throw) Illuminated Switch and this also does away with the height adjust switch on ur dash panel.

The DPDT switch will work your power antenna at full mast when the switch is turned on at the top, the antenna will fully retract when the switch is at the centre and will trigger the antenna to half mast when the switch is on at the botttom.

It may seem simple now that its drawn in front of you but it was a bit of a pain to work out originally, because the full mast trigger wire needs to be activated full time even when the antenna is running at half mast.

Hope this helps some people out.

My Sony head unit has the antenna wire but I didn't use it. I just use the factory trim switch (GQ) to put the antenna up or down.
I dont think my trim switch was ever connected to the factory radio so that it raised when you turned the radio or ignition on. I wouldn't have liked it anyway because I usually need the antenna well down when out bush. Already snapped one antenna.

The Pioneer head unit in my Patrol when I bought it must have the P/Ant wire connected up as the Antenna will retract fully when the head unit is off. But unfortunately it still goes up even if it is on CD or Aux. I would like it to fully retract when not on the radio and out bush. I might just do this mod for that reason alone.

Yes pionner don't do a power antenna trigger, most installers just use the amplifier trigger, y pioneer cant do what most other brands do has got my stuffed..

As for the GQ, i think the ones with height control just work off the switch, and dont need to be triggered unless they dont have the control

I have installed a Pioneer some years ago in a previous car and I still have the manual for the one that is installed in my Patrol. Pioneer use the theory that most of the time you need the Antenna when the head unit is on regardless of the mode, so yes they use the Amplifier as the P/Ant wire also. In fact the description shows that the wire name as "AMP/ANT". All you need to do is connect the AMP and ANT to the same wire. If yours says differently then they must have changed the documentation since my model.

Another theory for why they don't have a separate ant wire is because it makes good business sense or cents, for every unit they might save 5 cents in the manufacture but times that by the number that are sold, lots of dollars.

Hey what the hell, it also saves them putting in a extra wire where people with non powered antennas don't use. The Patrol is my first car that I have owned that had a power antenna, and I have never owned base model cars so power antennas were options just not fitted. For me that is 1 in 5 cars to have a power antenna. Now consider that in todays age most new cars with power antennas have decent sound systems, that's leaves and even smaller market of users with power antennas replacing their head units.

Lastly, considering most of their market is for non 4wd's they don't need to consider that antennas can get ripped off out bush. Yes it is a bugger for us, but this little circuit is brilliant and will most likely be my next mod.

Thanks WRX.

Sorry, don't mean to sound rude or bash ya, just trying to explain the reasons why Pioneer might have decided not to include an extra wire purely for the Ant Trigger.

As for the non 4wd owners, i have seen many a power antenna that run constantly in bommodores and failcons etc that r bent like a banana, this bend is also a cause for a failing power antenna, most of the time the antenna will get caught on a bend and break the rope inside the motor. 100km/h winds will destroy a fully extended 1m long antenna REAL QUICK, u jus sit and think of the force that is being applied to a little piece of 0.5mm tube.

TOYEATRE, have you seen my thread on instakking aftermarket h/units in trols? it has a kinda easy to follow instructions on how to replace the mast and ropes in these rigs and the 2 part numbers for the two different antennas that r needed.

You wouldn't really need to do this mod, just use a normal spst switch or push button to make/break the ant trigger wire when using CD or Aux

From memory, all I did was put a SPST switch between the earth lead on the factory antenna switch. Disconnect earth and the antenna won't go up.
