Hey all
My td42 has about 3 times that I'm aware when idling gets this real loud knocking noise and runs rough but only for a couple of seconds. Best way to describe it is sounds likea big end bearing gone. I'm guessing its injector knock as I had the injectors done up just before the first time it happened. This was about July last year.
Could injector knock be this intermittent? It goes fine except for them three times. And I guess what can I do to stop this happening.

Is it consistant with a certain brand of fuel, certain type of weather, amount of time your car was sitting before that particular time you drove it, a certain type of driving (i.e. hard acceleration etc)....?

Last 2 times could have been Bp fuel first time could have been anything. All different weather situations and also different times of idle. First time car was idling for a couple of seconds. Other 2 times idling for upward of a couple of minutes. The only constant thing is all times I was in low range off road. But whenever it does it. Always been relatively easy driving before it happens.
Just wondering if mayby an air leak would cause injector knock.

I just had a similar issue on my TD42t, knock at low revs (cold or hot), rough idle, smoke when cold, but still had plenty of power, no abnormal temps or anything. Dropped $100 of diesel and a new filter to make sure it wasn't bad fuel first (that was annoying)
Changed the injectors and all was good,

Until it wouldn't start, but that was a separate issue of the Shut off solenoid in the pump failing, changed that and it is as good as new again.

I fitted a new pump and turbo not long ago and my ute started acting a little funny.
Bit of a miss when cold. Idle rough every now and again. Had a knock in it when it warmed up.
Anyway coming home from work the other week all of the above started happening together.
Ended up being a couple of injectors had jammed and broken the springs in them.

thats the weird thing is i had the injectors done up about 6 months ago. before that never an issue. she just purred away all day no dramas what so ever. new injectors and now this random knock occasionally. might give the injection place a ring and see if they ever heard of it before.

My injectors were done about 6-9 months ago aswell.
Even took number 6 injector out and gave it to the guy who built them to test it and he said it was fine.
But guess what it wasn't. Don't think he was interested in the work, so no more business for him.

Hi Fellas. It never fails to amaze me the number of people who rush off to unload their hard earned cash on injector work every time the good old diesel gives a cough or splutter. These specialists will tell you anything to get their hands on your filthy money. Well serviced diesel engines will do huge mileages on a set of injectors. It pays to try almost anything before you go up that road. Cheers.

may be loose pre comp chamber/ers. when i got the head off mine 2 of these fell out. it had a slite knock befor this which sounded sort of like blocked injector/ advanced timing sort of thing hard to explain on a computer. duno just my 2 bucks

this wasnt the reason i overhauled the injectors. fuel economy was getting a little bad, heaps of black smoke, 20 years old and about 250000kms with all kinds of unknown fuel thru them, from here in aus and also png. thats why they were done not for any type of knocking noise. this just mayby seems to be a byproduct of getting them done which im a bit sus on.

i know what ur saying but its not consistant enough i would have thought. but i guess possible. i dont really feel like pulling the head off to check though.
