So i'm looking at trading in my current SUV (Toyota Kluger) for a tow car. I've had my eyes set on a GU Patrol with the RD28 engine for a while now, simply because my old man had one many years ago, and I'm very familiar with the RB series engines.
However there seems to be a fair bit of hate around on the internet for the RD series engine? I'm not really sure why.
Common complaints seem to be, 'its a turd' and it doesn't make torque below 2000rpm and decent power is apparently out of the question.
Are they really that 'bad'?
Do you really need torque below 2000rpm? (My RB30 doesn't come online until 4500rpm so 2000rpm seems incredibly early to hit full boost) - Yes this will be my first diesel.
Any finally what are the gearboxes like strength wise, People have said they are the same as the RB30, but the RB30 came with two different gearboxes the MF5 (Which will break if you look at it funny) and the MX7 which will pretty much handle anything you can throw at it.
Thank you in advance,
Matt
