I had a shaky / rattle noise in the back left side, when starting and stopping my Nissan Patrol model PatrolZM9ST, my local garage changed the Relay 1M in the back left door. The shaking is gone, but the charged me $794, for 4 hours labour and the part! Can anyone tell me if that is way too much? I looked up the part online and could buy it for $30-40.
Thank you :)

Wow I am way underpaid. That does not stack up if that is all that is explained on your invoice.

Assuming the part is $40, add on the mechanic's markup probably makes it $60+. 4 hours labour at $180/hour and here you are. Pricey for a mechanic, but not unheard of.

Especially if they think they can get away with it.

Maybe if you live in Toorak. Maybe I am out of the loop but there is no way in hell I think modern mechanics are worth $180/hr, especially if they have been trained at a dealership where all they learn to do is replace one thing after another till they fluke the solution. Different if they truly are highly trained specialists working on a premium brand in a high end independent garage but not the local garage working on a dirty old GU surely. I guess we don't know that but it still seems way over the top in this situation.

I never said it was justifiable, but it's not that far from the norm to make me go, "WTF? That's completely ridiculous."

Plus looking at OP's name, there may well be a female tax added.
