Does anyone know if a piston can be replaced without removing the engine ie removing the sump and head etc only?

Sorry to say not possible unless you remove the transmission and flywheel, there are four bolts across the back of the sump to access, could possibly be done that way but it would still be awkward.

It's an easy job to get engine out!! Just use an engine crane. Few connectors around engine to unplug and the engine mounts. All only a few bolts really, exhaust and a few other small things i prob forgot to mention. The main one is the gearbox and it's two hidden bolts above the bell housing.

After that Yes the piston is a very easy fix really!
