Hi all, I recently purchased an Mk short wheel base hardtop here in the Netherlands (first image below). I kind of want to put a roof rack on it that will support a rooftent. I'm wondering if the hardtop would be strong enough to support that kind of weight or if I should look for stronger support spots? Maybe round the back of the car? Any suggestions and tips are very welcome. Added some of the roofracks I've come across below as well.

Cheers!

Hi,

I had similar plans to put a roofrack on top. I did some research in the past and the easiest way I believe is to make some supports as in the last picture. I also considered to make something like a roll bar on the inside which could support the weight of the rack and tent. I've done a little test on the hardtop and it can bare some weight, but this was a static test. It's hard to estimate what the result of vibrations during driving, wind loads, dynamic loads are. Therefore I wouldn't take a risk and make a frame to support the loads.
