Gday all,

Had this issue for a while and hoping to get some insight. When cold, there's a scratching noise from what I suspect (but could very well be wrong) to be the from the alternator belt. When engine gets to operating temp it goes away.

If it was the belt tension, I'd assume the noise would be constant. Originally thought the noise came from the viscous coupling as I knew it was worn, but after changing it hasn't solved the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

How old are your fan belts?
Sounds like it may be them making the noise.
Temp fix is to spray some silicon oil on them.

Sometimes I get that scratching noise too when it's cold here. But usually it is accompanied by a feline scream and bits of fur flying and me smiling thinking there'll be one less cat sh*tting in my garden when the snows gone. :evillaug:

... but if the cause isn't feline, I'd go with what MQ Mad posted above.
