Some members had noticed it and before I went on my break I spoke with Canada on this and found my reply when I returned home, so here's the rundown. We received notification a few weeks ago that a new advertising setup was in place where entities could become Section Sponsors, this basically means they start a thread in the relative section, General Discussion now has Geico Insurance as a section sponsor, link below, Section Sponsors will be able to have one sticky in their relative section, they will not have any ability to moderate so they will be relying on Admins/Mods here to keep things on track.

As Admins and Mods even though we knew it was a possibility we were not told that a Sponsor had been allocated to General Discussion and I have taken VS to task on this, the relevant Dept should have told us ASAP. As part of our job we delete Spam 99.9% of the time before you see it, we are averaging almost 200 a month at the moment, on this showing up without notice that is exactly what happened. It has since been reinstated. Should another Section Sponsor come on board without notification the same thing will happen and VS has been made aware of that, it is just common courtesy as we run their forum as volunteers and put a hell of a lot of time into it.

I know exactly what many are going to say but that is part of how this type of business runs and makes money to keep us in a place to chat, so it is simply part of the way of the future.

When I know more, you will know more. Be aware that aggressive comments will be deleted by us.

Thanks for the update. Starting to look more and more like I should create a cloud deployment for forums. I think VS are a little vulnerable in their current position; over-commercialised. I can imagine it would be easy for a competitor to enter the market with a reliable, low-cost, low-advertisement model.

You may have noticed that Geico Insurance advertisement is back, this is a fact of life and something we need to live with, they have resigned and these small adds will appear, we were hoping for a different style and indeed there had been discussions, the last one 8 days ago when VS said they would keep us informed, but they didn't it just 'arrived'. VS as you may know are the owners of this and hundreds (possibly thousands) of other forums, some of which I have been having discussions with their admins for over a year. So, being the owner, VS can really do what they like with us, it is just sad their communications are so poor. I'm having discussions with VS on a number of outstanding issues with our forum and to say in recent weeks I have hit a brick wall is an understatement, it would appear (and I've told them) that if we were a forum of several hundred thousand members it seems we would be treated a little differently, to say I'm pissed off with them is an understatement, but in a private conversation with a US admin he said don't walk away, if you do they win..................

As said in first post, negative comments will be deleted from that thread, remember without money coming in you don't have a forum.

I've seen a number of forums on various topics try this over the last 10 years and every one of them has turned into an administrative nightmare just as this forum did before it was taken over by VS. Whether it is advertising scam bots masquerading as forum members, porn links or lethargic performance due to intensive bot activity, it is a lot harder to maintain a forum than people expect unless they have professional help. The days of being able to build and maintain a forum with nothing more than PhpBB and MySQL are gone.

We try our hardest to keep our head above water here, I will admit it was looked at to get P4x4 back at one stage but totally out of reach for many reasons. As said a few times you guys don't get to see the spam we have had to deal with since migration, but, this month has seen a significant improvement so far with smarter AI logarithms. Spam took up a lot of our time and has been a distraction from chasing other improvements.

Going back when we personally approved all new members spam was not an issue, once this was taken out of our hands by XF and AI it all went south, the chances of us going back to those days are somewhere between 0 and zilch, even though I keep reminding VS of that fact in reality it is less obtrusive than the current system, large forums that have over a million members are another story.

People need to accept a changing world, but not necessarily without question, it has been very difficult for me personally to fully accept the changes and I will include admins from other forums I have come to know since the migration, we still question.

Advertising in one form or another is something we must learn to accept if we want to keep a place to chat and inform people of our great product.
