Seven burned in campfire blaze in NSW February 27, 2011 - 4:01PM
A six-year-old boy is fighting for life after a horrific camping accident on the NSW mid-north coast which left seven people badly burned.

Authorities say a gas bottle exploded after being ignited by a campfire at Point Plomer, in Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve, just north of Port Macquarie, late on Saturday night.

The ignited gas bottle sent out a fireball that engulfed nearby tents. The six-year-old boy from nearby Crescent Head suffered third-degree burns to 80 per cent of his body, including to his face, head, arms, chest and legs, when his tent and sleeping bag erupted in flames.

On Sunday afternoon he remained at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, where he was airlifted to on Saturday night, in a critical condition.

A 42-year-old man from Port Macquarie was also seriously injured, receiving burns to a large part his body.He was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remained in a serious condition on Sunday afternoon.

A 40-year-old woman from Crescent Head and a 15-year-old girl also were seriously burned in the blaze. They were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Three other people - a 15-year-old girl from Crescent Head, and two 20-year-old men, both from Port Macquarie - were being treated in Sydney and Port Macquarie hospitals. They were said to be in serious conditions, with the girl being placed on a ventilator.

An investigation into the incident is now underway.Police said many other campers came to the aid of the injured and rendered first aid after the fire began about 11pm AEDT, until help arrived.

A crime scene has been established and has been examined by specialist officers.

In the words of Pauline "please explain"?
On one if the many TT theads on Outers it was widely reported some of the intoxicated patrons of the event thought it would be funny to throw a few gas bottles on some campfires.

I'm guessing after about 30 rums someones looked at a gas bottle & said " you know they don't blow up if you throw them in the fire...."

I don't understand how a gas bottle can end up anywhere near a campfire unless people are being f*ckwits.

That poor kid will be lucky to survive, or perhaps unlucky if he does. Thoughts are with him and the others who have been injured.

Media reports can get screwed up. "A gas bottle" could be anything. Not necessarily a 9, 4.5, 3, 2 or 1kg bottle. One of the people involved, or even someone else just passing by, and playing a "joke" could have lobbed one of those disposable bottles on. It could have been full or empty. It could have been a kid who didnt know better. I am guessing there is more to the story. Certainly not taking anything away from the fact it wasnt a nice thing to have happen to the people involved.
