I have been doing some reading lately and I want to buy an axe. Not just a $20 special from bunnings but rather something that will be around longer than me sort of thing...

Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe [420] - $189.00 : Atraes, Arborist and Height Safety Equipment Specialists

I was looking at something like the above. Hand forged made by men instead of machine! Are there any other brands that i should be looking at?? Cheers in advance. I should also point out I dont want a chainsaw.... i like manual labour ☺. It will be used for general duties around camp breaking and splitting timber/kindling

When I was lookin, everyone recommended old plumb s (brand) there was a lady selling all her hubby's ax collection on eBay, and I picked two up, beautifully made, keep an edge really well. At a guess they may be about 20 years old. Keep an eye on eBay as they come up as collectors items, but are usable as well.
I have heard the new ones are not as good as the old hand made ones were.

So you really want a somewhat exotic/fancy axe?

Get one specially made like the pro wood choppers have all perfectly balanced and weighted.

Cheers

Lol, no. I want something that is real. No synthetics, real timber, real steal. Preferably 1095 High Carbon, no stainless.
