We put a bid in on this winch SUPER WINCH SUPERWINCH X9 4WD Recovery Winch (eBay item 110623258795 end time 18-Dec-10 12:24:50 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats
and missed out, but the person has offered us a second chance offer to purchase it for $360.

We dont know a lot about winches, besides the obvious that Warn, Tigerz etc have a good reputation.

Is this winch good value at this price?

Going by its description it was for a Toyota but I am reasonably confident I can make it work on the Patrol. Or is there something I am missing and its not able to be wired up to the Patrol?

It is supposedly new but has been sitting in a garage for several years, could this be a problem?

It will cost me around $50-60 to courier it to Tassie.

Perhaps for the small amount of use I will get out of a winch I would be better of buying one of the Chinese eBay ones, or one from my local supercrap store for $360 that comes with a warranty but it would be Chinese as well?

They used to be "original Toyota optional equipment" for their 4wd's but they're imported and distributed by another mob these days.

I'd go for a single spd 12000lb Tigerz11 with dyneema rope then, it'll fit straight in too. Good warranty and back up with them and you get a bonus winch accessory kit for free as well.

If you are guaranteed that it is in working order then that is a cheap winch.

If you have no guarantee from teh seller that it works, you get it and have to rebuild a motor then it could cost another few hundred. Winches are relatively easy to pull apart and rebuild so almost anything is repairable. But if you want the assurance that it works then get a Tigerz or Mako whinch both have seals around the drum and motor so will not get water inside when you drive through rivers. In Tassi that might be an advantage in not having to service it as often.

Gday Danny, I had an X9 on a hilux I once had at it would work all day with out a problem. It even pulled a large tree from a dam up a bank with out skipping a beat. I think you have done well for that price! I would have kept mine when the hilux made its way to the NT but I wanted to have a winch box that was rececesed into the bar.

Danny cant really help you with the mounting postion but as for better than a chinese one I think you have done well.

There a good winch, my mate has one and has given it a hidding with total neglect.
In the 6 years hes had it , he's never done anything to it and it gets used all the time expecially with all this rain and he's drive way is 8k's long of slurry.
the only thing ive noticed is that the hand peice is very tinie and cheap feeling, but other than that, it does the job.

Just to clarify, we have been offered a second chance offer. We have not actually accepted the offer yet. (runs out today I think)

Over the years we have owned Patrols we have only had one occasion where we really could have done with a winch. Mind you, if we had a winch we would have driven into more bog holes on our own and may have got more use out of one.

What Im getting at is I dont think we will ever be real hard core 4 wheelers (too scared to bash up the Patrol and cant afford all the proper protective gear) so I dont think we need to spend big money on a winch thats known to be able to take abuse.

For the rare occasion I would use one I would be happy to use a winch block and take things very steady.

So I am seriously considering giving this X9 a miss. Mainly due to it having sat in this persons shed for 5 years so it has a lot of unknowns and secondly because I can walk into supercrap and grab a cheap Chinese winch with a warranty and save some money.

I have a feeling I will one day regret this but I am feeling better spending $400 on a known quantity rather than taking a risk with the ebay unit.

Decisions, decisions...hmmmmm my head says get the better quality ebay X9 but convenience tells me to get the cheapy.

I reckon that for the occasional user, like me, if you need the winch then you will be really stuck. I will not use mine often either, but if I need it then it will be almost last resort, and I am likely to be on my own. Rather than be out looking for a challenge, I am more likely to have got stuck just out of bad luck.

So when that happens there is no way in hell I want to be relying on a Supercheap Auto winch to get me out. All the warranty in the world is only good after you get out and you get home.

Get a quality one mate.

I have an X9 that came on the vehicle when I purchased it, and I will be rebuilding it with whatever it needs. I know I will be able to depend on it.

i had a x9 and i had no worrys with it at all in the years that i had it.
mine had a warn controller on it instead off the standard one so i cant say what the standard one is like.
i read a write up on these verse warns,ox etc with about seven winchs in total and they came in up near the top in most of the stages that they put them threw...
the biggest one they failed on was the line stall test and that was not so bad in my eyes because they were meant to stall at there correct poundage but keeped on going past there and broke the cable,but thats because there bolted hard to the test bench so i guess something has to break or stall????
my two cents worth i would but it over any cheap **** winch anyday...
