You're rebuilding a TD42 and your thinking of using TD27 parts? What's wrong with using TD42 parts? By the way, I'm pretty sure that both the TD42 & TD27 have a 28mm gudgeon. A quick browse shows the pistons for the two engines have different part numbers so there is no way I'd use the TD27 piston in the TD42 even if they looked the same to me.

Use the right parts for the right engine.

The problem is that here in Spain the TD42 is not commercialized and is more difficult to find spare parts. for that reason I'm wondering if TD27 pistons are customizable. Here there are many TD27 and no problem finding parts at a fair price.

What year is the TD42 and TD27? From the pictures and info the TD27 looks like it may be the same as the TD42T pistons and rods. If I'm looking at it right it looks like an early TD42 silver top piston. You may have to use the TD27 pre combustion caps if they are compatible. From what I have read a TD27 is a TD42 with 2 pistons removed.

 

When I rebuilt a TD27 quite a few years ago, the pistons and the injectors had both TD27 and TD42 on the labels. So it is posible as you say, the later model TD27 and TD42 parts might be interchangable.

I would say if it fits perfectly, you would have to check the rods are exactly the same length, piston diameter is correct and the valve cut-outs in the top of the piston are identical, plus they have a bigger stronger gudgeon and connecting rods than the old silvertop, then why not.

You might be able to get NIZZBITS ( a member on this forum) to look up the part nunbers for you and confirm if they are the same as TD27 to TD42 for the parts you need.

 

I'm sure I read on outerlimits years ago a rebuild where the bloke used td27 pistons as they are the same. Not sure weather Na or turbo motor though.
