Just want to know what after market intercoolers people are running and what are the best for the td42 (front mount, top mount, air to air, water to air.). I am looking at doing this mod soon.

GU Patrol 4.2L Ultimate Top-Mounted Intercooler Kit | Products | Cross Country 4x4

the big daddy for those with a nice fat wallet

or on a budget mate used one of these on his GU TD42t ute

Turbo INTERCOOLER Front Mount CIVIC INTEGRA 18x12x3 (eBay item 400182756356 end time 21-Jan-11 13:48:50 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

at the end of the day really deppends if you'll be going thru dirty watre as with front mounts and water to air clogging the cooler is a problem that top mounts don't suffer as much
off road weekend warrior or serious play toy top mount

daily driver and touring with no chance of muddy water clogging i would front mount ( with as bigger cooler as would fit) with out chopping half the front end away

I have the cross country ultimate. I love it. The kit came with everything, easy to install and looks like a solid build. Cross country can do an extra wide scoop to match the extra wide intercooler. Unfortunately I can't quite drop in egt's as I didn't have a pyro prior to install, however with the intercooler and then pump tweaks the 4.2 is another car.

It depends how you want to use the vehicle. Same as with any modification question.

If you're going lots of low range work get a water to air but do your research, most of them are junk.
If youre doing a lot of highway towing a top mount because its cheap and easy but be prepared to suffer reduced performance at really low speed.
for good performance at low and high speed but a headache putting it in go a front mount.
For ultimate performance go the Laminova, but $ per horsepower if youre not chasing big power they're pretty pricey.

front mounts arent too bad, pipe work is a touch tricky depending on how you do it

How did your mates turn out. Did he top mount it. I am thinking about a top mount as I dont want to cut holes in the front.

If you want the best, go Laminova. I run a 4 core integral to the manifold in my race truck. I am sponsored by a fuel injection mob and they have said that they have not seen these kinds of results from any other cooler (big top mounts, front mounts and other water to airs). my charge air temps are 340degC out of the turbo and 80degC into the engine. these are genuine temps. i have a calibration certificate for the aircraft gauge that i have set up to measure this.

I forgot to add in there that i have had big front mount air to air and frozen boost water to air. neither delivered the results

Cheers

or one of Andrews Custom ones.
Now that, is a handsome Intercooler.

'scuse my ignorance but who is this Andrew you speak of.

*Edit, Just noticed the sticker, Trikfab.... I'll look 'em up. What sort of hole do they put in your bonnet for the scoop, or is it stock. (not that it matters as I have no I/C or scoop anyways)

In my experience you can't go past either the PWR or Adrad (for air to air intercooling) cores for toughness, airflow and quality. To compare factory cores with either of those two brands is just a joke, the factory cores are just too restrictive and flimsy in construction.
Now when it comes to water to air that's when it gets interesting ;)
Regards Andrew.
