Td42 oil consumption

Hey All,

I’m chasing an oil usage issue with a TD. Uses approx 1L/1000km so I thought I’d ask the brains trust.

Blows smoke when you give it some and also a tiny amount can be seen out the exhaust when cold.

Have just changed all valve stem seals and it’s not them.

Motor was in a farm Ute approx 200xxxkm.

Since purchasing it and putting it in my wagon I’ve switched to castrol RX immediately which served me well last time. Has done less than 100km on new oil.

Would just like some helpful advice or thoughts on what it could be. Should I just run it through a couple of oil changes and see if it clears up or keep troubleshooting? Engine flush / decarboniser worthwhile possibly?

12mm/16g on it. Barely any blowby.

Thanks in advance

May be worth trying CEM (Cost Effective Maintenance) to help de Glaze bores etc. Being a farm ute it may have idled excessively
I brought my car with 350k on the speedo, 1500km trip home it used 1.5lt oil. 14 yrs ago.
When home I drained the oil, hot, filled with shell rimula with filters and an engine flush. Ran it it for whatever is suggested. Replaced oil & filters again and ran for an hour, replaced oil & filters again, then again 2000km later. So four changes.
Motor now has just over 500k on it and will use half litre of oil over 5000km ,maybe a litre when pushed on trips. Only ever used Shell rimula since. In the scheme of things oil changes are cheap.
cheers.
Thanks for the responses guys, I’ll look in to the CEM stuff.
Which flush did you use when you started this process?

200k is just run in for a TD

Mine is 310k and never noticed any oil use, I'm going to check the specs on the oils I've been using. Repco branded which is penrite, and Royal etc. Just what I could get in bulk locally when I stocked up during covid. I could probably find something better, but it always is a case of what I can get in a small town without too much bother or cost.

Hope you get to the bottom of the cause, will be interesting to hear.

Yeah it’s not ideal for a low ish km motor. My last one had 400+ on it and didn’t use much either but had been driven under load and serviced well it’s whole life whereas this one was in a farm Ute.

May have gone a while between service intervals and idled excessively as said above.

might put some decarboniser through it and hopefully after a few changes with good quality oil it’ll clear up. Fingers crossed
