alright guys, yupp i know, should service the patrol every 5000kms!
sweet, now we have that settled, on to my question :D

its been roughly 12 months since my last service,
(last service, did all fluids and filters etc)

now since that service, ive only done 1000ish kms!

so, should i do it every 12 months / 5000kms which ever occurs first?

or do you think it will be alright, for another 12 months.

added a poll also.

I selected every 5000km regardless of time, only becaues I do 5000Km in about 5 months. If I had not done 5000km in 6 months, then I would do it at 6 months. The oil may be good still, but as I do not test the oil, I have no real way of knowing the condition of it.

I reckon after 12 months it should be changed regardless of how many km's it has done.

1000km in 12 months! It could be 5 years before you change it at that rate!
I think technically its 5000km/3mths for oil changes. So I'd be changing it.
You could just do the oil and leave the filters if you really want to. I'd take them off and drain the old oil out though.

I ticked every 5k regardless of time but I do that every couple of months. In your case every 12 months would be ideal or 5k which ever comes first.

Im a mechanic by trade and rule of thumb that we use is, every 5000kms change oil and ebery 10000kms change filter. If you do bugger all kms do oil and filter every year!!

Gee you guys are too nice. Didn't you know if you over service them they will break down.:p( even a td42). Mine has always got done between 10 and 20 k.
Time has never been an issue for me

Not so sure now with the turbo though:D

Try 2x4.2 GQ utes, oil change/filter every 10000k, diffs, gearbox every 40 to 50000k disposed of at 820000 and 920000k with all Kit still working.

Gee you people waste alot of money on overservicing:-?

If it's only done 1000kays, take it for a long thrash, gets rid of any built up moisture content, then take it home, take photos and sell it, as you don't use it:D

Old school!

Thats what td42,s are, and all the better for it.

However I don't see every 5000kms as over servicing, that's what the factory serv period is,
and my oil at 5000kms or about every 3-4 months is soot laden , and stains things permanently ( rags, cloths etc), that's telling you the oil is holding a good amount
of waste particles and needs changing.( that's oils job, as well as cooling, and lubricating)
Hate to see what it looks like at 10,000kms.
But , if anyone has had there td42 oil sampled and analyzed at say 9000kms, and
its still protecting and has capacity left to suspend more soot particles ,I will stand corrected.
Someone like a escort vehicle doing 2000-4000kms a week , could prob get away with 10,000
or longer, but Im talking about a normal every day patrol, mixed town/country driving etc.

Ive seem a lot of proof that they can go with 10000km service intervals and go well over half a million clicks. If it fails after that the rebuild will be cheaper than the extra servicing. Just saying. :)

That's it, overservicing is a false economy, but also underservicing is no that good:D

2 cheap oil filters $20-25, $50-60 of oil. Wouldn't be costing much more than newer , computer, etc. 10,000 K service. What do they cost a service the ZD's CRD. pettys etc.??? And if they have to go to a workshop ? The TD42's dont need to go in! Dunno.

Oil is good.

Yeah I pay around 7 bucks each for filters, $100 or so for 20 litres oil
and do it my self, about $64 per service , x about 3, sometimes 4 a year,
so about what $256 a year for 20,000kms of reliable motoring.
Thats still cheap compared to others on here saying they are paying big bucks for greasy joes mechanical and butchering service to finger there car.

$256 per year is affordable ( on a engine that costs $5000 + too rebuild) also the the engine drains more oil out each time, and sludges up less than some I have seen.

But each to there own , just don't drop yours in the drink , it will be like the exxon valdes
all over again ( oil tanker disaster) haha.

I change the oil and oil filters in mine every 5000km which happens a couple times a year.

I do the fuel filter every 10k and air filter the same unless doing dusty offroad work and then change it sooner.

Auto box is every 60k with fully synthetic oil and is done by wholesale auto's.

Diffs and transfer every 20k

A few dollars in oil and filters is better than a bucket load of dollars to fix stuff later.

Also never understood the idea of new oil and old filters. Isn't that the same as putting on clean clothes without showering and changing your jocks??
