My '00 td42t has been intermittently running on when I turn it off for yonks now. It starts ok and doesn't blow excessive smoke. It's done 170k and has a bit of a tune up with the injector timing advanced a bit from std. I have always assumed it was a result of the advanced timing and possibly fuel solenoid. Am I correct in this? Or do I need to cough up for new injectors?

Fuel solenoid will do it. However, dribbling injectors will likely have the same effect. What I don't understand is why you are blowing smoke if your fuel system/turbo is adjusted properly. If you haven't had your injectors checked/serviced in all those kms, now it the time.

Yeah I don't think it is blowing smoke. I've followed while my wife drove and it's fine.
Haven't touched the injectors since I got the vehicle at 80k. Oh well another bill when I've got the moolah.

A mate of mine has advanced his injector timing too and his runs on, he seems to think the advanced timing has caused it.

My 06 TD42ti, has had tune up, also had new injectors, new solonoid, and electricals checked, idle adjusted a few times
Still does it intermittantly and has done since new.
It must be due to the advanced timing but I dont understand why when you turn the key back on, and it runs fine, turn off and it stops perfectly?

Thanks, it seemed to start after I had it tuned but that was so long ago now I can't remember.
Have to get the injectors done next year after I've recovered from the Christmas bills. The k's are starting to get up there, at least I'll know they are good then.

Mine does't do it all the time either and when it does it just does a bit of a cough and a splutter and stops.

No, mine runs but at very low rpm and it almost stops but just keeps going, shakes alot too. Turn key back on and all is good, turn off again and stops perfectly

my old gq's td42 does it to,one minute it will turn off perfect, then the next it will fire on like 3 more cylinders after its turned off, then shake around a bit. fairly annoying. im actually putting my problem down to dribbling injectors. i was going to buy new injectors but was told that putting new injectors on a old engine with an old pump can cause problems, ill still do it though :)

My 02 TD4.2T had a tune up also new injectors fuel pump etc and still does it intermittantly and has done since new also. The bloke who does my engine work said Nissan advanced the timing on the TD4.2 engine to try and squeeze a bit more power out and seems to think it's a common issue.

Mine does the same but only started after having new injectors and the pump reset to standard by a deisel pump specialist. Can't seem to sort it yet either.
