So I have been a long time reader but not really posted much and have learned so much knowledge from this website (and others) so i thought it was time to give back a little.

So the story..................

Well I have always loved the GQ, i had a shorty some years ago but i sold it in favour of buying an 80 series which served me well but i never really felt at home like i did in the trusty GQ, so i got rid of the 80 series and i started looking for another GQ but i thought lets go with the wagon, its more practical when it has 4 doors. Mind you im 27 no family or kids so don't ask where that idea came from, i guess i figured i could load more blokes in after a big night out on the turps....

Anyways, as i started trolling for another GQ, i had one major requirement, it had to be an Auto..... Why you ask? well i have owned 10 different 4x4's in the last 6 years ranging from a 1984 4runner to a surf to a 75 series....... after wheeling in an auto, i loved the whole point and shoot method some will disagree but horses for coarses...........

So one day i see an add for a 1990 GQ wagon, TB42 dual fuel, auto, done 270k's for $3500 with no reg no rwc, so i went and had a look, the car looked like it had done some touring but no real offroad work and i fell in LOVE, i had to have her......... $3000 and 3 days later she was in my driveway and this is how she looked the day i brought her home!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways so the story goes i was sitting around in the garage one weekend with a mate downing a few admiring the car and i thought you know what, i always wanted a ute but with enough room behind the front seats for a fridge and what a perfect specimen this car was for the realisation of the vision...... the always say the best ideas are always founded over a few cans........

So monday came and i decided to do the ring around at vicroads and engineers to find out what the requirements would be to get this project under way..... Vicroads put me onto an engineer not far from me who i proceeded to call....... he said bring the car around and let me have a look at it and discuss what you want to do......... HERE WE GO WHEELS WERE IN MOTION!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOOOOOO

So i take the car to him, first thing he asks is whose going to do the work, i say well im going to do the cutting, someone else will do the welding........ second question is where is it going to be done, so i say in my garage hahahaha........... he turns and says "what makes you qualified to know what your doing or how to do it and what materials to use?"..... MY VISION WAS WITHERING AWAY............

A bit of background, im a Materials Engineer, i specialise in steels so basically a glorified metallurgist if that makes sense..... so i tell him this, he smiles and says well you should have told me and the ball was rolling again............ So 2 hours later im on my merry way with a clear plan in mind............ i get home call around to see who will do the welding of the back section........... Most i ring say get a back panel of a ute cause it makes things easier and looks more factory.............

Unfortunately, everyone i ring doesnt have one and the one i find is rusted to the [email protected]#kin ****house and they want $1000 for it, so i ring back a couple of places and tell them this and they say well we can do it..........

Anyways the coming weekend, i call the same mate around and say im having a BYO angle grinder party, he laughs and says are you kidding, i say nah 2 will be better than one.... so we start stripping it.........

All stripped and ready....... discussions with engineer lead to me having to cut behind the rear body mount otherwise i would have to move the mount forward which was going to be more trouble......... so i though a bit more room and makes life easier...

NOW MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE AND KEEP MEASURING..... YOU ONLY GET ONE SHOT HAHAHAHAHA

The roof comes off

And there goes the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will notice in the next picture melbournes fine 4 seasons in one day!!!!

Looks kind of cool with the doors out...... looks kinds tough hahaha

Anyways the wonderful blokes at OnTrack4x4 agreed to weld the back up so it was on a tow truck and out to keilor to get the work done, engineer required bracing in the top of the roof and discussions was had about just cutting the doors down.....

3-4 weeks later she came home...................

I opted not to have windows behind the front just put sheets there, the ones i had seen all looked like submarines out of world war 1 plus no windows means extra security and less possibilities of leaks........the down side though is 2 massive blind spots but ill survive

So far, it had been nearly 2 months since the day i had decided to do all this....... so now the cab was ready to prime and paint....... originally i had though about changing the colour but i changed my mind...... two reasons, too much [email protected]#king around to sand and prep plus i wanted a black tray so i thought white on black would look the goods.....

And now off to painting, im lucky one of my best mates is a spray painter so prep, prime and paint cost about $400.....

OOOO Fresh Paint

Anyways a few days later this is what she looked like............. all painted nice and shiny

Anyways as with some of us on here i wasnt happy with the factory nissan seats so i went down to the local wreckers....... $65 later i had a set of 1989 Honda Prelude front seats

Anyways so time for a tray design... i had something in mind so i sat and drew it..... it had to incorporate a rollbar bolted to the chassis so design in mind i though ill get the rollbar done first....... in that time i had scored a millweld winch bar of this forum relatively cheap and liked the work so i thought ill call millsy (if your reading this, ill be coming to visit you as promised to show you the completed project)......... so he says shops moved to mansfield and i had no tray...........

Ebay!!!!!!!! good old ebay, et of truck mud guards for $10 bargain went and picked em up strapped em to the back (dodgy as all hell) and started my up to mansfield for the day...

Got there with no hassles, few funny looks (well lots of them but anyways) and the rollbar was in process......... I must say i havent got many pics of the rollbar in the making but the work done by millsy is second to none and his willingness to suggest/recommend and change as we went along was excellent...... I RECOMMEND THEM TO ALL (no affiliation just awesome work)

Anyways so i get home and once again where i work, one of the boys is a boilermaker so i asked would he be happy to help me make a tray......... answer was yeh that would be good practice so all it cost me was materials and 200 for his time..... ABSOLUTE CHAMPION

The skeleton of the tray...............

A bit more work....... oh and yeh the tyres changed, i had a set ot 35 claws which found their new home........

So the tray is complete and the final bits of the rollbar welded on......... its come out looking like a million bux and i couldnt be happier now time for powdercoat.........

Anyways after powdercoat and a clean here is the final product...............

The rear window is off a 75 series cruiser if anyone is wondering and the toolboxes are off ebay, they are geelong boxes about $50 bux a piece

So after all that went to the engineer and within an hour papers were in my hand approved as an extra cab ute with body lift and honda prelude front seats (thats all i wanted).... off to vicroads and now it is complete............... there is alot that went into it that isnt mentioned here, this is the summary......

And guys if anyone wants help or guidance or is thinking of doing this to their own cars, i am more than happy to help, you are welcome to ask questions and come have a look at the car if there is anything you want to confirm......

Anyways so now all the hard work is done, it took me about 9 months with downtime, weather and being busy with work but anyways time to modify hahahaha..... where to start suspension? motor? who knows..........

And As for the "Buzz Lightyear" reference, from when i started the project i had a buzz lightyear soft toy sitting with it the whole time...... he became the project mascot.... now he lives on the rollbar, ill get a picture and put it up

If you see me on the road toot or stop for a chat........... signing off for now thanks for reading guys............ happy wheeling

I hate to see a good troll all cut up but very cool rig.
Nice work mate.. Looks great! You will never stop working on it, but working on mine is one of my favorite things to do!
Thanks for the positive comments guys, really appreciate it

As for working on it, well it never ends but i refuse to have it any other way.......

I am slowly discovering little things here and there that need rectifying plus general mods.
Top work! Very distinctive and the mods all integrate nicely. Thanks for taking the time to document and post it.
Nice work :)
really like this one, good job
very well done. love the extra cab idea, looks the ducks nuts ol mate
x2 on the looking like the ducks nuts! a really well put together extra cab and tray. and pics of the inside and fridge storage? or is that next on the list? haha
Thanks again guys...... its good to hear people say its turned out alright

As for the inside, its really simple haha... i just rolled the carpet to the back and cut the excess, same with the roof lining......... ill get pics up of the inside when i get them

the fridge just sits there on the floor behind the drivers seat and surprisingly enough doesnt move around at all........
nice work with the conversion.

but is that tray level with your chassis?
Its not exactly level, i did put a slight tilt at the rear to allow for water runoff towards the rear of the tray.
top work mate. love the finished result and great write up too
Top work mate, looks ****ing awesome, I'm totally jealous, would love to do the same to my gq Wagon, I've been quoted $10.000 by millweld customs to convert me Wagon to extra cab ute, but can't really afford it, but as I'm a mig welder/fabricator, I'm very confident in my skills to do it myself, but see what happens in the future, I would absolutely love to see your gq extra cab ute, oh yeah, did I mention I'm absolutely jealous?.
