I have a mate who had a HMR,flicked it after continual problems with split cases, bulged heads.I looked at a 17 Rem decades ago,and came to my senses and bought a 223, 😉
The intended target and terrain conditions, availability and cost of consumables are my prime factors, also what's already in the box.I get the lightning velocity attraction, but wham bam isn't always the best answer [ ask the missus ] I haven't really considered another, but if Ruger get thier act together and build the Marlin 45/70 lever, that would grab my attention.(y)

This lot was destined for market early December, always sad to see them gone after having them with you sometimes 7 to 14 months. Even worse when there dead in the middle of the paddock, but its just the way it is sometimes.
I was told years ago by a farmer: "If you keep livestock, sooner or later you'll have dead stock."

Dont get a 17hmr get a Ruger American in 22wmr The Hornady 30gn stuff is good for 2200fps so you will be rolling foxes at 150m..
45-70's are fun but factory ammo is very expensive and loaded very light (to suit the old trapdoor springfields that are still in use)..
To get the most out of the 45-70 you need to roll your own (I have a Lee hand loader and some 300gn Hornady and some 405gn Remington projectiles if anyone interested)..
I myself would love to one day get another centrefire to replace my Marlin 1895 45-70 (that I sold because of my forked shoulder)..
Was thinking along the lines of a Howa mini action with a threaded barrel (for a brake) chambered in 7.62x39 (AK47 round)..
Very little recoil and still legal on deer and are fairly cheap to shoot compare to the 300 blackout.

The crap you toss around.

Been humming and harring for awhile about getting a caravan and joining the grey nomad brigade.

I mean, what could go wrong, super increasing fuel costs, possible future road taxes and or other taxes / penalties because you don't drive and electric dinky, getting locked out of most of the country unless you hire an indigenous tribe to escort you around at 3 grand a day, traffic jams with all the other grey nomads out on the open highway between 3 ways and the barkerly road house.

And most importantly, Foo up ya clacker in his 40t behemoth blowing his horn and shaking his fist at ya because your little 2.8lt can only manage 40kph up hill with 2 ton of van behind you.

Went for a sail up to 1770 (pancake creek) the other day on a mates 50ft cat. Nice

So, this morning I joined the local sailing club, gunna to learn to sail. I see a 40 odd foot sail cat in my future...

Fcuk the open highways and byways ...

Because I reload,I have different constraints,a 243 fits nicely between your 223 and 308,but factory ammo is not cheap,as I mentioned the 45/70 before,it can be reloaded at a reasonable cost especially with cast projectiles and it will knock over anything found in Aus,with the right ammo.
The other calibres in that field are the 6.5s,but also not cheap to feed.I'm not a fan of rimfire magnums as you have guessed,as there are hot .22 long rifle carts approaching 2000fps for a lesser cost,so now I have thrown a fox in the chookhouse, have fun choosing, but don't compromise on quality for a few bucks cost.

Yes, but I think it was only series 1. Interestingly I saw a pic of one yesterday on the news.

OK I'll have to keep an eye out for a legit beige one in future. If you're indeed correct then this bloke might have got something right then, as it looks very much series 1 to me.
Interestingly when that police sketch of the blue one hit the news I got phone calls and SMS from my mates having a good laugh. That sketch was my Patrol exactly
The police were way off as the sketch had series 2 alloys not the steel rims. Unless old mate swapped them around...

Had a 6.5x55 sweedish many years ago..Mouunted it on a synthetic stock, bent the bolt handle and fitted a 6x40 scope..Amazingly accurate rifle.

If the black & white photo the cops made public is the best they had to go by then I can see why they didn't get everything right. I must admit that the black coloured rear doors on the car they have impounded look the goods compared to the original photo. Matching storage pipe on the roof and all.

300 blackout how does that shoot? Just saw the rounds i quiet like the look of them, not too pricey either i must say, at 30odd bux for 20.

I had a 577/450 once. Bit big for most game. Made plenty of noise though.
