Thirsty CRD

I just brought a brand spanking CRD 3ltr Patrol Auto and finding the first half a tank real thirsty compared to my last DI 2005 and the last patrol had more weight on it.
What seems the norm in Klms for a tank of fuel around down

The service book says to replace the air filter only every 40000k. I checked mine the other day 13000k since apparent change and it was filthy. Looked like it hadn't ever been replaced. Dropped in a new filter and got immediate improvement in driveability, and an improvement of 3 litres per 100k, down from nearly 17l/100 to 14l/100.
