Hi,

I've had this in an other vehicle of mine. The little springs that hold the gear shafts in place with a locking ball could be broken or worn. Due to fatigue, the tension of the spring isn't sufficient anymore to hold the locking ball in the slot of the shaft. Therefore if you just hold the lever manually in place, it doesn't pop out anymore.
Normally, if this is the cause, then there should be less resistance to put in low gear.

Worn or split engine and transmission mounts can also cause it. If that is the issue the shifter boot will sometimes pop out of place too.

It won't be sagging leaf springs.

Ive had this problem before, the transfer shifter boot was on the wrong way and was pushing on the stick when in low 4.

rotated the boot 180 degrees and problem fixed.
