Ive been searching through the forum tonight, checking out a few things.... amongst them all the awesome trips and places people are or heading too. I have a 05 3ltr.... bought it to set up as a tourer but am feeling a little uncomfortable with the chance of blowing up on the road in the middle of no where....i know... just drive it! i wanted to hear of some successful 3lt journeys and how far you have taken them??? :D

Fel free to move if I've posted in the wrong section.

From Vic; SA a few times, many months worth of driving up the Vic high country, QLD and back a few times, to the Simpson and back. I reckon ya just get Total Care from your state's Royal Auto Club if you're concerned, maybe even travel insurance and just drive the thing wherever.

I'm starting with 130,000km on the clock when I bought it, well within the range of disaster( if there is a range) Good to hear of some great trips to some out there places with these vehicles.

I did a 20,000km round Oz trip about five years ago, all up weight 5.5 tonne. Not a single problem with my '02 ZD30. In fact in 12 years and 180k of ownership it's been far and away the most reliable car I've ever owned, despite being the hardest used. Only failure I've had so far is a serpentine belt tensioner, and it gave me over 5k of warning before it let go, but service guys said it was ok, so I didn't bother changing it as I wasn't planning any long trips.

I got my 05 stock standard with 197,000km on it 2 years ago. Original owner drove Canberra to merrimbula almost every day. I'm now on 246,000km and it's done the high country, Sydney, Adelaide and is a daily driver.

We have an 05 3.0l. I have 3 kids under 8.

We are overloaded, heavy and do a lot of solo trips including; Anne Beadell Hwy, Simpson twice (once solo and away from the usual route), Central Australia, Fraser Island, Moreton Island, numerous trips through the highcountry in Vic and NSW, SW of WA including the isolated Nullabor crossing following the coast not the bitumen solo.

We have a good mechanic, epirb, sat phone, someone at home who follows our trips, excess food and water, and make it as safe as possible.

Just get out and do it, any 4x4 can let you down.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Being completely honest I get a bit anxious on the build up to big family trips, but I think I would feel the same no matter what car I owned. The zd might add a little more though.
At the end of the day , it has taken the family and I to some of Australia's most beautiful places and even got us home again.

Our 2003 ZD30 has done 285,000 trouble free kays
It has completed two full laps of Australia towing a large caravan
Been to most fishing spots around WA
And now just lives for getting abused all over the Kimberley either in 4WD or towing our Camper Trailer or Off Road Bike Trailer
I guess it will go bang one of these days but who knows when, it still pulls like a schoolboy at the moment

But then again I must love living on the edge, because we just bought one of the new Y62 Patrols
And as you know you can't go remote in them because of the fact you can't make it between servos, and even if you do make it you can't get premium unleaded outside of the metropolitan area
Lucky I live in the non-remote Kimberley then hey

Basically make sure you service and maintain it like you should any other vehicle and get out there and enjoy it!!!

Ha ha ha .... good to hear so many positive 3litre drivers and some amazing trips being done where these vehicles are being pushed and used how they are meant to be and not wrapped in cotton wool and just used for the school pick up.
A lot of the DI talk on here is doom and gloom and waiting for the inevitable. A guy that transports our Koalas for us clocks about 300Km a day has every addition you could add to a 05 GU and 250,000km and when i spoke to him...he said "whats this NAD's stuff you speak of !

I'm jumping into mine tomorrow for a 5000k round trip south, done the greasy oil and filter changes this week but that was due anyway. Just came back from a quick 2000k round trip to my sister and I've done that quick trip a few times recently, I'm far from being afraid of them.
My old girl has spent a lot of time in the shed when I'm OS working, but when I'm home she's constantly on the road and making up for those lost shed hours.

Countless trips out west and up north and down south.

Coffs harbour twice.
Lithgow (bluemountains) once.
Camerons corner / Birdsville once.
(22 hours straight running time)Cape York once.

Apart from an alternator, aircon compressor and about 8 tensioners - no problems :)

However, I've converted to a 4.2T so all I can say is enjoy the fuel economy!

Just finished my 5580k round trip to SA and the only issue was my main battery slowly dying in the colder climes, but I managed to nurse it home and change it out this morning.

Relax mate. I have 2 3.0l patrols and use them as pilot/escort cars for over sized loads. My wife and I do about 100 000 km per year each. My last "away" job was from Maqua Station to Argadargada in the NT. A total of 5000km from driveway to driveway, crossing the Simpson twice in 4 days. Fit NADS and a glow plug controller then enjoy an awesome vehicle
