Unfortunately for me the finance cooling off period is 21days which has since lapsed.

Sorry mate you are in a tough situation, from your original post I assumed you had it for only a few days.
So you need to do some serious thinking on what you want in the long run and do a cost analysis on where your likely to be.
Doing a transplant will cost you more in the long run but may be worthwhile if you intend to hold onto it for a long time to get your money back.
I had suggested earlier a rebuild, but this needs to be watched very carefully and not done by people who don't understand the complexities of the engine and are likely to take shortcuts. Is it possible to get some sort of cash settlement from the dealer seeing as there is some warranty on it?
The second hand engine option also needs to be watched carefully.
There are new engines around for about $7,000 that I have heard of.
What is the latest development, have they stripped the engine yet to establish the actual failure, as I said, the oil light coming on may mean other things have happened as well.

You said 30 kms down the road after picking it. How can that be 21 days? The vehicle was obviously a time bomb finance or not. Have you spoken to Dept. of fair trading? You do have a case on this to do something.Unfortunately for me the finance cooling off period is 21days which has since lapsed.

I picked the vehicle up on the 20th December, and due to the Christmas break didn't hear anything until last week.
Looks like the dealership and the warranty are covering a reconditioned engine from being installed at a mob in diesel specialist Penrith. No cost to me...
I've spoken with the specialist behind the back of the dealership and they pretty professional with previous works covering reco diesels.
Basically I plan to take it into my mechy in Canberra as soon as I take delivery and get a full diagnosis from them. All faults will then be reported to the warranty company to see what action will need to be taken.
I then will also have something to stand on if I went to Fair Trading...
Im lucky enough to have another daily vehicle, so I wont be too much out of pocket from having to catch the buses/taxi's.

take sound advice from lads here and try and get refunded,get legal representation onboard if possible and just let the veichle at the dealership,remember you only just drove away after the purchase and it blew so you are well within your rights to be refunded!!
a patrol can overheat for any reason,a radiator can go at any given time and leak,remember the coolant is the lifeblood of this engine so it's not only a head you have to worry about it's basicly every other engine component that may have overheated also!!
are they going to inspect everyother engine component with a fine tooth comb? i highly doubt it unless you were lucky enough to be living longside a really large nissan dealership in japan!!
the cylinder head fix on these is just a simple fix,it's a very strong engine so it can get away a lot of times with just a new head,coolant flush and gaskets,this is even an expensive fix but in the ZD30 terms a cheap way out.....IMO the complete engine should undergo inspection and get a fresh turbo fitted also.
a reconditioned engine,if it was me i would want to know who reconed it...... that could be just one out of a used patrol with any amount of miles on it... i wouldn't trust it.
just take sound advice and don't let them botch this one up,it will let you down again! !

sounds expensive to me with no injector pump, Manifolds, Turbo, Timing Chains or Tensioners or any other hang on parts.
also be carefull now of a lot of clone ZD30 engines coming out of china!
E-bay is flooded with them,one i saw was rated at 8hp lmao ......... PMSL with the specs of a honda generator engine!

sorry guys to be taking this thread slightly off topic,but if you read the link i gave,that engine seller states it's co produced with nissan.
i would not be one bit surprised if this is where all our engines are produced!!
MR dongfeng china,in colabration with nissan.

Go see a solicitor and get him to send a letter of demand will cost under $100
Demand a full refund plus costs, (this is the beginning of litigation) under their registered dealship obligations under consumer law, they took the vehicle back same day, you had good intent and bought a car in good faith from a dealer luckily, you are now without a car. Demand your money so you can buy what you need a car that works. Sounds like these b***es did a job on you, they never buy a car without their mechanic doing a full check over it, they never get screwed and don't let them screw you. Boy another ZD grenade !!!
