If you still want it to be a 4B you will need to have a gearbox that you can attach a transfer case to.

I once put a Holden V8 into a 1966 FJ40 Landcruiser. I got a bell housing from a company called Seatons Engineering in Perth. I had to engineer engine mounts, change the radiator & mounts, change the accelerator pedal & cable, make a mount for the Holly carb, replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one(it was bashed off by the front diff). It did not work all that well due to the 3 speed gear ratios not suiting a revvy V8. It wouldn't grind in sand very well & tended to bury itself when power was applied.

If you do not use a Nissan gearbox you will also need to change the gearbox mounting, gear shift, length & spline of front & rear drive shafts, speedo cable, wiring for 4WD & low range lights, wiring for reverse lights etc.

I don't know how strong Patrol gearboxes are. I wouldn't think that the box behind my RB30 would be able to handle V8 power.

has anyone done a full bolt in figure for fitting a gen3 or gen4 into a gq? I've had a bit of a look around and all those site (marks etc) sell the stuff seperatly - they may sell a bolt in kit but that doesn't include wireing accessories (air con, alt etc).
I like to know the final figure of a full kit that will give me everthing i need to fit it all in my shed.

Unless you have already invested alot into your current GQ I would consider selling it and buying one already converted. It will save you alot of time & money this way trust me. You may even get a good one with a ton of new & aftermarket parts for a very reasonable price (like mine in the classifieds section) ...

if the engin is out of a vr, vs, vt,vy you will need the chip the marks make to send the happy signals to the ecu the that BCM used to do.. since you dont use the bcm on a patrol

I started a thread awhile ago regarding what a V8 conversion "Finished" costs

From the half dozen or so replies ,yep theres only half a dozen V8 patrols out there ???

There was no definitive answer as to costs involved

UR 50 LO,
Thoughts are bang on
IF your not mechanically minded or not handy on the tools or you really dont know what ya doin
Buying one already converted is the way to go

You have to go as far as diff ratio's if they need changing etc.......
A complete cost from start to finish and completely legit - i don't think you'll get much change out of $10 000 and wouldn't surprise if it went above that.

I built mine on the cheap and still managed to put big $$$ into it and that was doing everything myself and sourcing the main parts at less then 1/2 price. I garuntee you will have to add thousands ontop of what you think it will cost to do the conversion, because it is the little things you don't budget for that blow the costs out IMO. I would of spent an easy $3-5k (written down somewhere as I kept a list) just on things that nobody else mentions in their conversions, and simple things that are often over looked...

Things like new vacumme hoses to suit the new engine, radiator hoses to match engine/radiator, new fuel lines for fuel injection & high pressure power steering lines to suit. TONS of nuts, bolts & washers. New belts to suit whatever alternator & power steer you run with. If your going from a petrol engine you will need a diesel radiator to suit and if you can't find a 2nd hand one you may as well buy a brand new 3 core like I did (if buying new anyway). Then you figure well seen as you need to change the exhaust manifolds to suit anyway you really should put new gaskets on it, same with the rocker covers and sump (you need a rear bowl HQ sump). May as well replace the plugs & leads to make sure she runs great when I finally get her going, and if I am going to do that a new coil, dizzy cap & rotor button would be nice too. May as well splash out on top grade oil & oil filter as well as engine coolant too seen as I am going to all this trouble of converting it I want it to be perfect and don't want it running on cheap crap especially after the amount I have already spent on this thing...Gotta do an EFI fuel pump conversion so I'll need a new filter of course and I would be better off to get a surge tank as well then. Now it's wired up I will need to put a check engine light in so I know if any sensors stuff up on me and can run a self diagnostic test. WOOOHOO running now but the clutch won't disengage, better upgrade to a GU master cylinder and while doing that I may as well replace the slave also. FINALLY back on the road after X amount of time & a truckload of $$ but now I have no gauges working other than the speedo so should I pay $$$ for a marks tacho adaptor + aftermarket temp senders and new wiring etc or just buy some tuff aftermarket gauges?? ETC ETC ETC ETC...

Then 2 weeks later your over the power already and looking for more $$$$$
OR you add up the costs and wish you had done a TD42 conversion with a big turbo setup instead...

Not entirely true outback. In regards to LS1 and 2 conversions is simply a matter of dropping the PCM into any reputable tuner and have the VATS turned off, should only cost you around 50 bucks.

as ur-so-lo has stated allow plenty of extra $$$$$$. i just did mine. it was out of a gq and going into a gq. the only things i needed was the computer( guy lost the orig), the exhaust lengthened to suit the wags and engine mounts. seems easy and cheap enough, hell got the conversion real cheap to start with.

never, never ever ever again. did heaps of it myself, a great mate made eng mounts, etc but so much small stuff that just blows the budget out. hind sight i would have bolted the td42 in i had in the shed into the wagon, sold it as a great runner and sold the v8 conversion as a unit and used all the money to buy 1 already done. upside is i now have the truck i always wanted and know the hows, whys etc in the eng bay. next is paint job outside for it and fit the cage, bar work, locked gu 4.6s diffs, endless air, 5 link front and triangulated rear end that is sitting around on the old bus and will have effectively turned all my good money into a dirty purple 20yr old 4x4 with all the fruit that i would be lucky to get half the $$ back. but i tell you what, givin it plenty of throttle in the dirt at full lock, 3rd or 4th gear, looking into the trees out the front winscreen and havn to ask the passenger to lean back as i need to see out their window to stay ontrack is awesome knowing that that is only half way to the floor and half way through the torque curve makes it all worthwhile. now i think i should get on ebay and order the bigger injectors and chase another 100 or so horsepower..... hell i have spent this much whats another couple of 100's.

wheres my keys darling, back soon.

5000 it cost me. vp 5l and as baged out as they get i love it. then i sold the intercooler and turbo stuff and injector pump so it realy cost me like 2300 or somthing and theres still mor to sell. way cheaper than the 6g deisel rebuild i got quoted. my deisle had a big turbo and water to ari intercooler running 12psi. it was no wear near as quick as the v8. and once the reves get up high it is nearly unstopable. honestly i didnt want to rebuild a deisle only for it to be the same old wel...slug
