Given that the tb42 is so thirsty running approx 25l per 100ks how much more fuel would a v8 use. Engine examples being the good old 350 Chev carby / fuel injected 5.7 , duel fuel.

Just out of interest

Worst I got was 29l/100 ks and that was with the camper in tow and sitting idling for hours charging the batteries and running the pump for the shower for a week. on a long drive fully loaded but no trailer I get around 17l/100 ks, not bad for a 5.7 Gen 3 in a GQ wagon

if you want economy a diesel is the way to go .
at 11-12lt per 100km with 110rwkw td42t is faster then a stock tb42.
chev v8 diesel about 170 rwkw and 16-19lt per 100
Duramax v8 diesel if you build a nice one 500- 1000 RWHP and also 10lt per 100

The only problem I see with a repower is the cost. Most V8 conversions will set you back anywhere between $6-10,000 inc engine, unless you go the V8 diesel route, and the budget around the $20,000 + mark.
Unless you plan on keeping your 4x4 forever, its not worth it.

Now, this is only my opinion, and I have done a few repowers over the years, and didnt listen to my own advise in all cases.

Buys a lot of petrol with current setup:D

TD42T faster than a TB42 ???
Depends on turbo size, boost amount ect
11-12L/100Ks outta a TD42 n/a maybe
Duramax getting 1000 RWHP (faaaaaarrrrrrkkkk) and return 10L/100Ks again tall order

I think with mention on conversion costs Vs economy Vs car life span (or ownership)

Duramax or V8 diesel of sorts is 20K and beyond (drive in drive out)

5L conversion can be had for a few K IF you can source the parts and do the spanner work
If not around 10K

Gen3 (5.7L) is dearer again
Bloke in town has a V8 diesel converted GU,his 6 cylinder F truck diesel out pulls it
His words
"Biggest underpowered POS ever owned"
