VE Pump Conversions

I read on a different forum today that someone had a mechanical VE pump conversion on DI and it piqued my interest. There's not much information out there on them but I see Diesel Australia makes a kit.

The person was complaining that they had no power above 3000rpm on the factory turbo (probably not the pumps fault), which got me thinking about what the pump is actually capable of. I believe these were fitted to Toyotas.

The post mentioned their pump was 12mm (presumably modified) and they had single stage injectors, so no doubt fuel delivery quantity can be increased over factory spec.

It's a pretty big compromise. Cruise control needs to be redone with a cable setup.

The check engine light needs to be disabled as it will always be on, which leaves one open to other faults going unnoticed until they become big problems.

There are reliability questions from shoehorning a different fuel pump on - leaks (including high pressure fuel as the injector lines will need to be changed to custom ones), durability etc.

The engine will also be significantly louder and rought with the single stage injectors

I'd just like to know what performanc e figures a 12mm pump is actually capable of.

I did some more research. The VE rotary pump was originally a Bosch design that the likes of Denso and DieselKeiki manufactured under licence.

Since VE refers to a whole series of pumps, I'm not sure which ones in particular people put on the Di's. I'm going to assume the highest performance one I can find - a modified 12mm boost compensated one originally for a Cummins 4bt.

The seller lists the maximum power output as "250+"HP with the right supporting mods. Keep in mind that's for the 4BT which is a 3.9 liter motor. A stock VP44 is capable of the same figures give or take.

So based on all this there isn't a huge performance advantage to swapping one on.
