Just picked up my second hand Warn winch today, got it in the shed and sat it next to my deceased Tigerz11 and a mates original Aldi winch (which lived a hard life and died winching a massive log underwater for ages). I was astonished at the size difference!!!

It's heaps different! Im not sure what to trust, is the Warn over-engineered for being 9,000lb or even 12,000lb or is the Tigerz11 under-engineered for 9,000lb or even 12,000lb and is the Aldi neutral! Im not sure???:(

Eitherway looks like the Aldi is a good buy and the Warn I assume once freshened up will last me longer than the Tigerz11 :p

Notes:
- The Aldi and Warn's clutch lever feels like a nicer turn and feels like it engages better, even when on the ground.
- I do like the actual clutch lever on the Tigerz11 better.
- The hand controls for the Aldi and Warn is WAY better.
- Aldi and Warn control box is not sealed, but my Tigerz11 control box stuffed up twice because it didn't seal just right and kept moisture inside the box which also killed it and it was mounted under the bonnet where it is warm and safe from dirt. As mentioned previously the Aldi died underwater and all the solenoids work on the Aldi and the Warn and that looks like it has had a decent life as they both have dirt inside the box.
- Good cable attachments to drum, I had a few issues with the Tigerz as you do not screw on the rope. Not a biggy but its something.

looks very much like my 12000 lb ironman, except the ironman has a plastic cover over the end of the motor.

What are ya doin with the tigerz?
I will keep an eye out for another and fix it...maybe?

I will pull the internals out of all the winches on the weekend and have a look at the difference between them all.

What happened to the Tigerz winch? How did it die?
Solenoid box packed it in and the drive off the motor is some flimsy little thing that broke.
There was only a short warranty on the Solenoid box, the motor to drive shaft coupling was flimsy and crap and died and the very outside set of planetary gears don't run even close to smoothly around the housing and I didn't have confidence in it anymore. It happened after when I was winching up a slippery slope, it was rutted, no bog holes, no logs just a very shiny wet clay surface and it spat the dummy and I couldn't even release tension. I ended up having to get the high lift jack out and use it to pull the Patrol about half a metre forward to unhook the winch. If a high lift can pull it without breaking thats worrying?. And thats why I got a Warn instead of fixing it, seen standard 9,000lb Warns pull all day out of ridiculous situations.

Just got the new edition of 4WD Action (no.158) today, and on the last page where it says what's in next months edition, there is a winch comparo. It looks like they're testing Tigerz 11, Superwinch, MaxTrac, Terrain Tamer and Warn. There are a couple of others, but I can't make out what brands they are. Should be good reading.

What size is that Warn? 9 or 10K
Also the only diff between the old low mount M series Warns 8, 9 & 10K was the gearing, which gave them their load rating and speed.

Yeah X2, the size of the gear box is not really relevant but does make the photo present an undersize winch.

It is all about the gearing and step down ratios in that gear box that will determine its pull rating.

I also have not really heard a bad thing spoken about the TigerzII winches, not heard much bad about the Aldis either but I dont think i will bank on one of them because of lack of feedback. ;-)

The TigerzII winch has a good warranty and National service backup. There is Lots of them around now and certainly enough of them to suggest that they are worthy of consideration.

I think i will still buy a TigerzII when i get around to bolting something to the front of the GU IV.

I will certainly still keep an eye on this thread though, open em up and give us a good look.

Cheers for your effort.

the tigerzII is still a cheap crap chinese winch , it just has way better backup service of which you pay that bit extra for, im pretty sure i found the maker of their 2 speed winch on the net the other day, just cant remember if he was one that would sell individual winches or you had to buy a minimum amount

in any case , for peace of mind , paying that bit extra for back up service would be worth it

Sudso, the Warn is a 9,000lb as per the thread title.

patrol28, if you do a search there are a few threads about issues with Tigerz11 winches. Not too much feedback about them but some people love them because of price and others hate them. My opinions of them are purely from experience with the one product I have owned of theirs.

Better than most chinese winches though, and Paul is continually having them improved, including an all new solenoid and wireless system.
Who else does a 12K winch with Dyneema rope for under 900?
People whinge about the price of Warns and wont buy one then whinge about winches that are less than half the price because they're "cheap crap" but still do the job ok.
