Hey all,

I'm on the market at the moment for a winch, just wanted people's thoughts on which winch to get.
I had a warn xd9000 in my old patrol and compared to some big 12,000lb Chinese winches, it used to pull a lot faster under load even being a smaller winch.
Have read up great reviews on the runva 11xp but can't decide weather or not to bite the expensive warn bullet or go a runva this time round.

What should I do?

I don't use a winch that often but when I do I'm usually very stuck and have try'd absolutely everything and anything of getting unstuck.

Can't comment on performance because I don't have either of these but I did consider both when I got mine. In The end it came down to not spending (4x more and small fortune on something that's only used on the odd occasion (warn), and not having a dealer that I can drive to in any town and get service or spares (runva).
Which is why I went for a brand that I can get to a seller for spares in heaps of places all around oz.
How available is a service agent and spare parts for the runva? Yeah it has a good warranty and that but how easy can you claim it?
If you gotta pull it out and send it off, for a warranty claim then to me that is a major drawback.
Nowadays I look for stuff that has a good and readily available service and spare parts so when something goes wrong (and eventually it will) it's easily fixed.
Most of the cheap Chinese winches around seem to do the trick for the weekend warrior and ones from major dealers now have rebuild kits available too.
Just my 2c

Have a Warn XD9000 for 10 years, only had 2 winches in. 25yrs both Warn. Don't use it off but always reliable. I consider Warn life long winches. Given the cheap winches at the moment you could by 3 for the price of a Warn. It depends on how deep your pockets are.

I have a Mako Avenger 9.5tds.

It is reasonably priced, really well built, has seals on the drum to gearbox and drum to motor ends, I have used it underwater with no problems. It has the brake on the outer end of the gearbox just like the more expensive Premier winch.

It was voted first place in the 4WD Action winch testing even though they are part owners and promoters of Tigrz 11.

I run SK75 Dynema rope on it.

Warn are good IF you buy the higher spec versions.

They unfortunately did themselves no favours with their crap cheap (well not so cheap) Magnum, the bottom of the range Chinese winch ( I got rid of mine).

And the top of the range warns suffer from the same solenoid troubles as the Chinese winches ive proven that. So not anymore reliable in my opinion except maybe mechanically and a snatch block sorts that problem.

the reason the 9000lb pulls faster than the 12000lb winch is the gears.

both have the same motor, just different gearing..... ive had a 12000lb tigerz11 for years without it ever ****ting itself and ive never cleaned it or serviced it (i know i should but couldnt be stuffed).

ive flogged it to death pulling a fully loaded gq through huge bog holes and up near vertical hills mostly on single line pulls.

warn is way over rated with old technology....

the new manufacturers are always improving and adding new technology.

id go for a dyneema rope new tigerz or something similar... 12000lb also

Some good points here...
I haven't looked into sourcing parts from runva but I do believe they have their own website.
Only reason I am considering warn again is I can take it straight back to Arb if it does stop and they can sort the issue out.

I don't mind spending the money once as long as I don't have to buy the same thing again later down the track.

I wouldn't use a tigerz winch, I'm just not a fan of tigerz or roo systems. Warn has been around for so many years and they still producing top stuff. The latest gear are the new models as well, few things are different then the older specs.

I guess I'll have to wait and see, I'll end up making the decision on the spot.

Thanks for all the comments

Have you considered a second hand warn, there are a few xd9000 on ebay for only a couple of hundred bucks, and probably work still. If not a $70 albreit style solenoid or a new motor and everything else is basic serviceable with a new grease up. Just as good as a new one for easily half the price.

Yeh I've seen, also a guy who rebuilds them with breather kits to make them more water friendly. Just going to write a few down on a piece of paper and throw them in a hat and pull out one and which ever it is I'll buy!

i have a warn xd 9000, very easy job to pull down and grease , parts are expensive through arb, but your local auto lecki has cheaper prices.
any major parts apparently amazon.com is the go, haven't personally needed any from there but had a look through and the prices are a lot better than here. Simple stuff such as gaskets etc are easier to get local, I think roadrunneroffroad sells bits too.

Yeh the plan is to keep it for a while, will go from 4by to 4by but at this stage I have no intentions of selling my 4by for at least 10/15 years. Spend the money once and never look back

I got a Runva 13.5k lb winch, went to install in in my factory patrol bar on the weekend, and its too big by about 6mm. I will need to either drill out the mounting holes and weld some extra plates for support or grind out the support bracket and move it over about 6 mm or so.

I guess that's what you get when you get greedy with the size of your winch.

This is why the xd9000 is the pick for the factory bar too. I have the xd9000 but put the 6hp motor on it. This wouldn't fit without modification, which I knew, and so I moved the whole mounting plate across about 10mm. You wouldn't even know it was done just by looking at it.

I am thinking I will do the same thing just to make it look nice and neat, and keep the strength.
