When i start my 2005 td42ti ute, ive noticed there is a weird noise coming from what sounds like the clutch, when i press the clutch it goes but when i let go it comes back again. it sounds like something is rattling, this noise can only be heard when the truck is cold though. any idea to what it might be? and is this normal for a car with 60 000

I agree with Baydiesel, it's probly gearbox rattle. My brother had a bad rattle after he installed a cheap clutch. We pulled the box out and installed an excedy tough clutch and the rattle stoped. I'm pretty sure its the clutch spring dampeners which absorb the engine vibration and stops the vibration being transfered to the box. When we had the box out you could move the main shaft on the gearbox back and forth quickly and mimik the rattle noise.
If you can put up with the noise it is of no real concern.

Worst case, could also be an input shaft bearing.....unlikely but worth looking into.

My GU did it on one particular 4x4 trip, lots of tough low range work.. box was very hot, it also had a low 30K on the clock at the time. Noise was mostly when cold, I ended up changing the oil and within an hour or so of driving it dissappeared.

My GQ is noisy on idle however if I give it a little revs or push the clutch in, noise dissapears. GQ was a little different, the warmer it got the noiser it got. Been like this for some time now. Apart from the noise, no side effects. Did take it to several places whom suggested not to worry about it, Patrol boxes can be noisy for a number of reasons, all of which has been posted previously. Personally think it is input bearing related.

my ute had the exact same rattle when i bought it . took it back to the steallership and complained . they assured me it was normal. so i asked a mate who has only ever owned patrol deiasal utes he to said it was normal. so i have ignored it and done another 120000 kms with half of those kms towing 2 tonne trailers. and it is still going strong. it was hard to ignore at first because it is a loud rattle and it genererlly starts once it is idling for a min or two and stops as soon as you put foot on clutch. hope this helps.

Hey Matt
My GU did the same thing when it was cold my suspision was the torsion springs in the clutch plate. Had a chat with the guy at Exedy Clutchs I also had a recording of it and they confirmed my suspision. They also said it's common with the standard clutch to make these noise's if the 4wd does heavy off road work. There are 4 of these springs that are in the clutch plate and they help to absorb the drive line shudder / back lash. After removing the clutch I inspected the springs and 3 of the 4 where stuffed one of them had 3mm of slop. I ended up putting in a Exedy Safari HD and now no more noise.

matt, my car (TD42 turbo), was making the same noise. I had ALL the responses you have had, prices to fix were $1000 to $6000. I took it to have a general check by a 4wd specialist ready for a trip, and they noticed the idle when cold was 650 instead of 700/750. When they adjusted it, the noise DISAPPEARED. They gave me the technical reason why, but difficult to explain here. That was nearly 35000km ago, my 2cents input.
