Gday all,

was hoping somebody could explain what lock-up refers to in an automatic transmission? I only just learnt that my GQ has one but can't find much of an explanation of what it actually is or how you use it.

Thanks very much guys

Slight difference exactly how it triggers between series 1 and 2 GQ's but..

Above 80 K's in Overdrive without hi throttle position the Tranny ECU sends a signal to the Lock Up solenoid to "Lock" the Torque Converter so the gearbox becomes directly coupled to the engine.

This greatly reduces heat and improves fuel economy

Should have added... you can't "use it" yourself unless you fit a TC Lockup over-ride switch. From the factory it is only selected by teh Tranny ECU.

It is a great mod to carry out for less than $30 or so and theer are a few threads on here about them if you do a search.

thanks very much for the help mate, just a question when you say lock the solenoid to the toruq converter, does that essentially mean the transmission is locked into 4th gear?
