Hello All,

My names Mike, I doubt anyone would know me, I am into drifting and have a Nissan Silvia and slide that, I want to make that into a track only car as I am sick of using it as my daily driver!

So I have been pondering and looking for a Patrol, I hear so many stories about 3.0L poping then others say do exhaust, chip, intercooler and fan. By the time I do all that there is another 4k that I could have put to a TD42 GU or should I still do exhaust, chip and cooler if I got a TD42?

I want something I can Drive daily, Tow a car occasionally and go have some 4x4 fun, must be reliable, fairly new/tidy, ST model.

Budget 25-30k

Question is get 1999-2002 GU TD42 with a few mods and not have any cash left to do anything.

OR

2005-2007 GU 3.0L for 15-20k then do the anti-grenade setup (NADS) and bullbar, winch, roof tent, 33's and maybe a front locker with the spare 10k?

I don't know what suits me! But I need it to last as it is a pretty decent investment at this age!

Cheers in advance for any advice!

Hi mate

Have you considered a GU TB48 , they are reliable , you will easily be able to tow just about anything with ease , and be a competent 4x4 that you will have fun with , no major modifications to make it perform , No NADS , you can attain a fairly tidy one in ST or TI trim well within a budget of 15 - 20thou dollars and with its 185kw and 420nm torque you can also take it drifting
Keep in mind fuel consumption can be anywhere between 17 - 26 litres / 100 km depending on how you drive it

cheers

If u get a crd 3.0 they are pretty reliable. 06 onwards. Earlier td42s are getting cheaper nowadays. Pay under 25k for a decent one with extras

As Timo said have a look at 100 Series Cruiser's. More comfy, quiet and refined than a GU and if you afford one the 4.2 Turbo Diesel (1HD-FTE) is a simply awesome engine.

If you are set on a Patrol, a 4.8 can't be beat for towing, a CRD with a chip and exhaust should tow alright too. A TD42 is a decent tow motor, it will quite happily sit at 90km/h on the freeway loaded up, starts to suck a bit of juice at 100km/h while towing though. You'll want a tune and exhaust if you don't want to drop back on hills though.
