Hi Guys, I need new tyres for my 2003 Patrol. Have had 265/75R16 Cooper H/T's and have got 110,000 km. Originally had Bridgestone Dueler's which came on the car from new and got 94,000km from those. What other tyres are good. I was quoted $284 ea for new Bridgestone Dueler D694's. These tyres are 10 ply and wondered if this gives a stiffer ride. Like to hear your thoughts. Steve.

My vote is for BF Goodrich A/T's, they have come up as the best allrounder for me whenever replacement time has come around and still looking good this time. When I say for me I am basing this on up to 85% highway and 15% off road but, of all types, yet still quiet on the highway.

Mate if you got 94000 out of a set of tyres why would you look at anything else ? assuming you were not that unhappy with them?

I've got D694s, but no one listens; so go with what others say, especially those recommending muddies. :D

Cheers

Another vote for the BF Goodrich A/T. Just replaced mine after 90,000kms without issue.

Love to know how people get so many klms out of tyres... Maybe speedo error contributes.

I had the D694's for quite a while.... they were a great tyre. Fantastic all terrain. Only reason i swapped em out is because I wanted something a little bit more aggressive.... I'd definately go the D694's again as an all rounder. I don't remember mine costing much more than $250.

Got too come down to how and where you drive it, otherwise that's a pretty big speedo error. I'm ecstatic if I get if I get 80,000, which I regularly do. I do a lot of highway driving but the bloody roundabouts (particularly mid size where your speed is up a bit) would be the biggest detractor to tyre life for me.

I have MT's. They are loud, handle "differently" on the blacktop, not as good as AT's on sand, and ill probably get bugger all km's out of them.

But they look cool, and together with my bull bar i strike fear into the hearts of small car drivers when they see me approaching them in their rear vision mirror.... MT's are there for a good time, not a long time hahaha

Two weeks ago in Nowra (NSW south coast) for B/S 694 275/65R17's I was quoted between $310 (Bob Jane) and $379 (independent outlet) :( . As nobody except Bridgestone Select could get stock any time soon, I have put off the purchase for a while.

Maybe I need to go up to Sydney to get a great price! $255 for B/S sounds great - that was for 265/75R16, not the 17" I need though. Would the size make that much difference to the price?

I have 17" Cooper STTs that look a bit shagged at nearly 35k. I have had two sets of Cooper STs that only lasted just over 40k both times. But, traction is great, never let me down particularly on the trips around Oz where you really have to think of them as a consumable of the trip. That included gibber rock plains on the Strezlecki and Oodnadatta tracks and so on. So they were worth it at the time as no punctures or shredded tyres. But the low klms get me as they are pricey here in Canberra $400+ a corner. I am looking at getting BFGs next as everyone I know that uses them get at least 60K or more - particularly with the AT. But I am after the MT K2s - but I do a lot of steep slippery fire trails I guess. I expect these to be $300-350 a corner. Remember to get tyres that are capable of carrying your loaded 4WD. Check the load ratings!
Cheers.

Ive got 265/75 16 Dick Cepek FC2 on my trol and love them, bit early to tell but they are holding up great 12,000km on them, been on dirt, stones in the flinders and on the farm, $330 each, bit expensive but are Mickey Thompsons equivlent to coopers, 10ply rated, and a cross between an alterrain and a muddy, can be noisey on different types of bitumen, check out their website.

My 17" 285 STTs are the same at 38k - not really muddies anymore. I've been on the beach a bit of late so I'm sort of ok with that as they don't dig in, but the last couple of weekends on Glasshouse Mtns firetrails they have been found wanting, even with the lockers backing them up. But at just over 10mm tread depth I can't really expect too much of them! They will be replaced within the next month.

They had 17k on them when I bought the truck and the grip up to about 30k was phenomenal. The only times I got stuck were when the diffs were on the deck, or when I was in water up to the sills in a well known tough crossing (Mt Beerwah mudholes, which now have a rock bridge courtesy of Forestry). I suspect that I might have got more mileage (maybe 45k) if I'd been a bit more religious about airing down on steep rocky tracks, I know better now.

Her Indoors wants ATs to get the noise levels down a bit, but the next 40k will definitely include some serious offroad touring and the STTs really cut the mustard there. I guess what I'm saying is that they are money well spent, and although I'll do some serious research before replacing them, I'm 90% certain I'll go STT again.
