How do you guys get your fuel up again, last time I changed it took me about 30 minutes of cranking to get the fuel back up.

Which engine are you talking about? I fill the filter with fuel before fitting. Then use the manual lift pump/primer. Black knob on top of the filter assembly. I had no dramas.

Mate its the ZD30, I also filled the filter and used the hand pump but still it was a task and a half.

Another guy at work had the same problem, I was thinking of putting an electric lift pump in with a switch.

How often do you change your fuel filter? I was thinking about doing it with my next service, just for giggles.

To get the fuel back into the filter to supply the pump:

I take the hose off the injection pump side of the filter, I then pump the black knob down once, air comes out of the hole (the hole you have just taken the hose off) whilst held down put finger over the hole and let the black knob up (this creates a pump and valve effect which draws fuel into the filter from the tank side, instead of air from the pump side), take your finger off the hole and do it again. Do this until fuel comes out.

You can do this to oil cans to get the oil back up the spout aswell

just for future ref i dont think half an hour of cranking over is good for your starter motor, engine as diesel is also used as a bit of a lubricant. Im nearly certian that the fuel pump runs when the ignition is on the 'on' position (like the glow plugs) so no need to crank the starter, but yeh i would do that either. prefill the fuel filter and then use the hand primer pump

heh guys last year i changed the fuel filter on my dads 3 litre and had a lot of trouble primming the system again. I finally gve up and removed the fuel filter and housing and upon closer inspection found a small piece of blue plastic in the filter housing. Once removed it pumped up really quickley.
I'm not sure where the plastic would have came from.

Hi scrawni. if you do not want to install a pusher pump at the rear of the vehicle, I ran this setup for quite a while also which creates a high point for all of the air to bleed through (picture courtesy of 5upaMav :)).

I purchased a facet fuel pump which I would connect to the new outlet on top of the filter and just let it suck the fuel up through the filter and into a 2ltr container. Close the ball valve when the fuel is running fine into the container and you are done.

Cheers,
Whitie

Changing A Fuel Filter On A GU IV Patrol

I'm putting this post in to help others to change a fuel filter on a GU IV Nissan Patrol as it's the worst filter I've changed in my whole life what a joke plus its expensive $$$ even for a non-genuine replacement filter (Repco RDF38).
1st off remove the fuel hoses off filter housing, then unbolt the x2 mounting bolts 12mm this will help with better access to the filter warning plug on the bottom of filter unit. The next part is really tricky getting the spring clip off the plug, get a small flat blade screwdriver and lift one side up to remove clip, use other hand to grab it before it goes flying away never to be found again. Once the clip is removed you can unplug the wiring harness from filter, and the whole filter assembly can be removed and placed on a bench for filter replacement.
The next tricky part is removing the filters water sensor from old filter, just twist it and you will feel it unclip from its locating lugs then keep turning it until it stop's then you should be able to pull it out from filter housing with a little force job done. Then on the top of filter pull and remove clip for the plastic T-piece, inside your new filter are new o'rings for both items. Unbolt clamp holding old filter and change out with replacement filter.
Then you should be all good to put back together.
Hope this helps. Not a fun job by all means for anyone.

I use a tip posted on the forum. When disconnecting the hoses have a bolt ready of the correct internal dia (forgot what size) and lightly plug up the hose ends. Then when its all reconnected it doesnt take long to pump the fuel up again :) because you havent lost unnecessary fuel from the hoses
