Hi,

I went out recently to check my winch cable however when I went to spool in my cable using the wireless controller the winch control box clicks and nothing happens except for my gauges in the cabin flickering. If I try to spool in the cable using the corded control the engine rapidly begins to turn off.

I don't have much experience with winches so Im not sure what to look for, all of the connections seem fine. Also I opened up the control box and its mint clean inside.

Oh and the winch is a 12000 lbs Iron man monster winch.

cheers guys

Sounds like the motor/gearbox has seized maybe... the symptoms are akin to a very large current draw and if you are just spooling the current draw should be minimal.

You didn't mention spooling out... does it spool out under power OK or is it the same?

Nope, doesn't seem to spool in or out. If the motor gearbox has seized does that require me to open the winch up and give it a checking over or is it a specialist issue?

Don't have any experience with the Ironman winches myself but if you drop it out of the bar then you should be able to split the motor off and check easily enough.

My WARN had a big drink of mud a while back and a quick pull down and clean and it was away again.

gday i had a warn winch on my ute when i bought it, was doing the same thing.I ended up pulling it apart, it was a nasty sight was pull of water and mud and the whole unit was just siezed up. I think you can get winches waterproofed, in the case of my warn it was too far gone in my opinion and would have been cheaper, easier to just buy a new one, i want a highmount anyway.

cheers for the reply. Ill open her up and give her a good clean if need be.

I just got back from the Otways and thankfully the Patrol must have known it didnt have a working winch because it just ploughed its way through all signs of the soft stuff.

Just had the same issue with my winch. Same symptoms as you described. PROBLEM: water in the motor. A strip down and clean and all good as new.

I now have the same issue with my Warn XD9000.

So here i was winching my camper around the back yard, as you do, not winching for long periods just short burst winching checking walking back to teh car winch a bit check the trailer and so on, now. the winch stopped during one of these checks walked back and nothing, just a clicking sound and it can be felt in the control box. It clicks both on winch in and out, luicky i weas able to free spool to take the rest of the rope off so i can still drive.
So far i have done what Warn recomends clean and check earth on motor, all seems well.

I gave the winch a full rebuild not even a year ago.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Open the solenoid box, clean up all the connections and try again, if still no good then disconnect the wires from solenoids (draw a wiring diagram so you don't mix up when putting back together) and the power lead at the battery end, then check each solenoid individually. There are 4 of them and one may not be operating properly.

Out of curiosity where did you get your solenoids from and how much if u don't mind me asking. Did you have to take the whole winch out to get to the control pack? Is there a upgraded solenoid pack that can be brought?
I got some from eBay last year when i rebuilt mine and they buggered up first time I used it they stayed on I was lucky enough I was able tompill the power cable off the battery in time before It spooled all the way in and wrecked something got a bit of damage to the old battery terminal from it but that's it.

ahhh bugger, most 4wd shops stock them, was going to get 1 off ebay but getting 1 from local arb shop $38 each, solenoid packs range from $80 to $130, and just took cover off control box to get to them, left winch bolted on
the single solenoids off ebay have extra small terminal to mine but believe was just extra earth wire
