posted this in Safari thread, perhaps should have been here, so,

Hi, read all the threads on which oil, and that it comes in big drums. Has to be this special 600w oil or steam oil because of the bronze worm gear in the winch drivebox. Modern oils with additives (eg hypoid oils and usual gearbox/diff oils) are detrimental to that bronze gear.
Has anyone yet come up with a small quantity (1 litre) supplier?
There is one person selling lighter grade steam oil (really need the 680, not the 460 he has) on ebay at moment, 300ml for $12.
OR, has someone bought a drum and happy to sell me a litre?

thanks for replying Dan, got some Mobil 680 gear oil from a local earth mover guy (who is also in our 4wd club) who has big Cat bulldozers. Interestingly he asked his lubricant supplier, and his advice was any gear oil that has the viscosity AND passes the copper strip corrosion test would be ok. The copper strip test determins if an oil is ok with bronze gears such as the worm gear in our pto winches.
