G'day guys. I have noticed that with my guiv driving along the motorway as the auto changes into 4th gear there is a shudder. Done a bit of a search and came up bungus, so any ideas of what this could be?

Mine was doing the same thing & was overdue for an auto service, car has done 330k & I tow a 15 foot van with it 2x a year for a long run...Melb-Cairns is not unusual. I took it in for an automatic transmission inspection and a service with a referred GOOD auto tranny mob. The verdict was 3rd gear is pretty shagged and there is wear in the clutches cause you have friction material particles in your fluid", I was quoted $2800 for a rebuild with possibility of up to $1000 more depending on how many "hard parts" such as clutches, etc. needed replacing, this includes a bit of a toughen up with heavy duty bands & properly clearenced cluthes and a faster shifting custom valve body.
I asked them to give it a service and change the filter & I'll come back soon for the rebuild as I don't have the cash right now. That was a month ago & I haven't had the shudder since & I moved house & towed a double horse float chock full for 4 days in a row......
We'll see if the shudder comes back.

I thought the converter would have been locked up long before changing into 4th? Or could it be unlocking as it's usually quite a slow change under no load?
I think it locks up after going in 4th.
My converter was shuddering after going into top gear and a service sorted it, it did take a month to stop shuddering though. I thought it was rooted, but its all good.

Update
Just an update on this thread, the auto has started shuddering when locking up the converter in 4th again, only after driving on fwy for 30 mins or more. This is 6 months on from the service I had done, I do over 100k's a day & have towed my van onto Teewah Beach 2x, Inskip once, and out to Kenilworth once as well.

cool thanks for the update mate. mine still has a little shudder. been meaning to take it to a transmission place for a while now but i needed new tyres so it has been put off. if it turns out to be the t/c that is on its way out is there a super dooper converter that i can use or does the standard one still do the job? oh vehicle has 156000 on it, thought it should last a little longer than that?

Just get under it and drain the oil in the tranny sump. 17mm bolt from memory.. About 4.8 liters will come out. Top up with transmax Z auto fluid.
I've been dong that every service instead of taking it to a shop for a full flush And it gets better every time and it is cheap !
