Hi guys,

I'll try to make this quick. And I am not really mechanically talented as a rule. So please excuse my simple minded post.

A couple of months ago, I started to get a high pitch whining noise coming from under the bonnet when the engine was running cold. It disappears after about 2-3km by when I am assuming the engine has warmed up.

My regular mechanic said something about a gasket at the turbo manifold leaking etc and that it is not super critical. I also noted that I am getting some oil leaking which is showing on the intercooler. I have a catch can installed, and had it since I purchase the car with 84,000km in late 2017.

They quoted me $6,000 to replace the factory turbo etc. I am assuming that the entire turbo, gaskets, intercooler would be replaced and there would be a tune at the end to ensure the boost is optimal. Without knowing the exact details, that's what my best guess is.

Do you reckon it's a reasonable price for a completely new, factory standard turbo and all the bits plus tuning?

Or would you recommend a turbo specialist to look after it? I have now clocked up 210,000km and I am keen to keep the car as long as I can really.

It's a 2011, GUIV

Thanks for any suggestions.

To much money mate, there are good turbo's around that members have tried, procharge, etc, turbo's can be reworked if the damage is not to bad. The oil misting could be bypassing the catch can, depending on brand. If you are game enough remove the pipework between airbox and turbo, check for oil mist in there, if it shows then the oil is likely getting past the catch can. next remove the aluminium inlet from the front of the turbo and inspect, there should be no in and out play in the compwheel shaft and only a small amount of sideways play, but not enough for the compwheel to contact the throat of the turbo, so look for wear marks.

Also remember the std intercooler is known for weeping oil from the corner crimp seals of the core to the end tanks.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

Would you be able to recommend a turbo specialist in NW of Sydney? Blacktown/Castle Hill etc?

hi mate that’s way to much and I’d bet they are not including new intercooler and very unlikely a tune. Head over to precision turbo and speak with them, they are good genuine people will get you a new one and can upgrade it if you choose and their preferred mechanic is next door that will do the install and they have a guy 5 minutes down the road that will machine warped manifolds if required too.
Good luck.

Your welcome let us know how you go. I think from memory he told me the new standard garret turbo was about 1400 ish and he would upgrade the compressor wheel if wanted for about 300. Told me exact prices but I’m a goldfish.

I spoke with John already, he gave me an approximate figure half of what my normal mechanic was suggesting. Though I like my mechanic, he is always honest and does a good job, maybe he priced it so high knowing they would take longer to fit and sort it all and maybe they also didn't want to have to do it.

Anyways, thanks :) You have been very helpful.

the whining noise might be a leaky gasket or warped manifold . degrease it when cold then take it for a 20 minute run and give it some berries towards the end , let it cool down a bit and have a close look to see where it is leaking from . if it is a warped manifold they can be machined but some preferr to just replace them . a lot cheaper than a new turbo especially if it is not the problem . also degrease and check the intercooler , ebay cheapies work good if your only after mild performence upgrades and are very easy to replace

Maybe ask your mechanic a few more details in what the 6k involves. As much as everyone says its easy, what happens it studs break or are already broken? Maybe he was pricing for the worst, easier to drop in price than have to ring and ask for more.

He did mention something about "possibly" having to call a specialist to remove a stud if it breaks.
I am not sure any business would drop a quoted price.
Never experienced that before.

I will see him Tuesday as they are fitting me a new radiator, so I plan to ask specifically what they are charging that much for. Considering originally they said 2,500-3,000 or so.

Thanks for your thoughts.
