Hi Guys,

After some advice regarding an issue i have with my Fan and Aircon in my GQ, From what i can tell where the (Fan housing?) is located above the passenger footwell it seems this is made up of two parts with a foam spacer in between?

i have two issues one the foam has decided to fall apart so the fan makes a horrible noise when running and also most if not all the air comes out in the footwell as there is a gap present. Has anyone had this issue as well? not sure where i would get a replacement part or if i could even just purchase one from the wreckers without buying the whole system.

Second issue i'm having is my aircon is not working.. from what i can tell the Aircon compressor is not engaging when the button is pressed. i have checked the clutch on the pully and it is free so i don't believe it's the clutch causing the issue more a power issue. trying to figure out the wiring i need to look at to check it's getting power.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The air issue could be casues by the slidder slipping on the aircon control.

The air con not working could be a number of issue. Try running a temp power wire to thewire comming from the air com compressor - the compressor should click is you tap power.

The most common cause is that you dont have enough coolant gas - and the unit is cutting out. - You probally should get a air con guiy to pressure test your system and regas it.

As for the fan making a horrible noise when running, just take the fan off, 3 screws and the wiring plug and check it hasn't got any rubbish in the fan.
Mine had a chunk of metal that had rusted and fell into the fan making it out of balance.
Leaves and crap also get in there

You can replace the foam with foam strip from bunnings
Comes in rolls and has a sticky strip on one side

Check the Air Con fuse in the kick panel 30 amp (i had one blow)
Maybe low on gas
There is a relay under the metal panel next to the battery

The aircon not working could be a number of things...
Not enough gas is more than likely the issue. However its not just a simple re gas and you're right to go. There's a reason it doesn't have gas. You'll need to find it. I replaced every o ring I could, plus the drier and pressure switch. Now mine doesn't leak at all. And its bloody cold. 0 degrees tbh.
But, the electrical circuit start at the fuse, then through the fan circuit, ac switch, thermister under dash, pressure switch, relay then compressor. It also has a cut relay in the autos if the temp gets to hot on the radiator in the autos

Just checked my fan as you reminded me it was making a noise again
More rusted metal in there
Flicked the Recirculation lever over to Fresh and got half a dust pan of rust out of there + 2 pieces of metal from some sort of deflector was loose up there
There in the bin now
Vehicle has lived out in the weather for the last 22 years hasn't helped

The fan in my GQ suddenly started vibrating and making odd noises. Pulled it out and found a nest of some rodent in there - lots of embryonic bits and pieces spread around. Lovely job getting it all out, I must say. God knows how it got in there!!

As for the seal, I tried pinchweld and it didn't work very well so I got a roll of draft excluding tape from Bunnings. There's a post on here somewhere which includes a photo of the tape. It's quite thick and has a sticky side. Easy as to fit up once you drop the fan housing out and sealed perfectly.

Found the thread - very comprehensive and a good idea or two. has a photo of the tape I (and others) used.

Thanks for the info guys, pulled the fan out.. and well.. i have no idea how or why some drongo would put half a news paper in the damn thing.. and if someone didn't put it in there.. i have no idea how it got there...

needless to say it's running sweet now and no noise moves a lot more air also.. now just have to fix up the seal.
