if you go from 31 to 33, then you will gain 1.5" in ground clearance but loose 1.5" of top of tyre to gaurd height... wont loose centre of wheel to gaurd height as the suspension determines that not wheels

As I understand it 31" tyres are 31" in dia and 33" tyres are 33" in dia.
If that is so then if you go from 31 to 33, then you will gain 1" in ground clearance but loose 1" of top of tyre to gaurd height.

It is these data sheets the wallopers will use to measure if your lift is illegal, and from the one I've got for the GQ Wagon, you've got 565mm clearance as standard from the centre of your wheel, to the top of your wheel arch. This is the distance they measure your lift from, so you should too.

To the top of the wheel arch??? need pics :D

It's actually worded "Vertical measurement from wheel centre to top of wheel arch opening at Unladen Mass" (Or Full Bump for another measurement there). Don't count your flares if you have them fitted, I guess it has to be the body panel.

If you get the GQ one, it has a rough picture on it.

Okayies...

After a phone call to the RTA today, they are all but fuggin useless in the call centre. Referred me to "VSI 50", available for download HERE as a *.PDF file.

This in turn refers you to the various "Road Vehicle Descriptor" sheets that the RTA has put out. You can search them online HERE, but they only cover vehicles from 1999 onwards. For those with GU's, search using "Nissan" and under model use "Y61 Patrol" to find your relevant data sheet.

For those like yours truly, with GQ's, there are no such sheets available online at present, though you CAN call the RTA to get one faxed / emailed out to you. The bloke I finally spoke to in the Tech department was quite helpful, and quipped that all he's been doing since these laws came out is faxing out these data sheets.

The GQ ST & TI wagon's have trim heights of 565 front, and 530 on the rear.

If you exceed 615mm (565 + 50), either via suspension and/or body lift, or a combination of these, and big tyres, you're gonna be up **** creek and will have restrictions placed on your rego, in accordance with VSI50.
Vehicles raised more than 50 mm above the original trim height as established by the vehicle's manufacturer will only be conditionally registered in NSW and will have restricted access to roads and road related areas.
EDIT: FWIW, just got the truck back from the diesel fitter this arvo and dugt the tape measure out. For my GQ Wagon, 31" tyres and a 3" EFS lift kit by Zordo, I'm just under the limit, with a 610mm trim height on the front and marginally over on the back at about 590mm. Might have to fit an aux tank and keep it full. ;)
