I have a pair of front shocks for my GU patrol ute 2001 and want to know if there is a trick to get the top nut off.

I had a trawl through the old threads, and i couldnt find anything that specifically answers my problem.

The bottom nut on the shock is easy.
1 - grab shock with hand
2 - using rattle gun undo nut.

The top one is not so easy.
You can get an open ender spanner in there and turn the nut about a 1/4 turn, but I cant hold the shock properly. Everything Ive tried just slips. (vice grips, multi grips, strap filter tool)
There isnt access in through the top like cruisers have, so thats no go.

The "awsome" Gregorys workshop manual i have just says.
Step 1 - undo top nut.
Step 2 - undo bottom nut
Step 3 - remove shock absorber
Step 4 - reverse instructions to install new shock absorber.
No joke...

Im hesitant to make the shock unservicable as if I cant get the shock out or I run out of time, im left with no car.

Anyone have any sneaky tricks they know of?

Yep, replaced my shocks yesterday. Had a crap of a time getting some of those nuts off. In the end a Stilson wrench did the trick - has a camming device that grips tighter the harder you push it - you can end up denting the shocks. Had an even harder time getting the new springs in, even with using spring compressors and dropping out the control arm.

So now I have a complete set of front and rear original shocks & springs with less than 10,000km on them. Don't know if they are worth anything? Might try the ebay option.

Iff your doing springs you only need to undo the bottom nut, if your changing the shocks just get a pipe wrench on them or grind it off, There a PITA but as said only have to completely remove if changing them
