Idling too high.

Hi all, the last couple of times I have driven my 2000 zd30 auto, I have noticed when it is put into neutral to park, that the revs are going up to about 1200. I have checked the heat switch and that is turned off, so that's not the cause. Sometimes if I stop and restart the engine it goes back down to 750 as per normal. I have checked for fault codes, just came up with the mysterious 0505, that is not listed. So i'm assuming all is well with the sensors etc.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this ?

I have also noticed for a month or so that it is harder to start in the mornings, I have to crank it over a lot longer for it to start. I don't think it is due to colder weather as I owned the car last year and it fired up first crank,(after heating the coils of course). I'm wondering if there is a heater coil problem. Any thoughts on this and if so, how do I check the coils?

Thanks,
Paul.

accelerator cable

Check to see if the accelorator cable is seating itself properly back into position.
I have tried revving it a few times to see if something is sticking. What seems to happen is, when I first start the car, it is fine. It is only after driving it for a while that this happens. Then it will drop to the 750 rpm level when first put in park, and then will cliimb to the 1000 to 1200 rpm level, very strange!

re the hard starting, I read about a similar problem on the explore OZ site. Comment was that maybe there was air leaking into the fuel system somewhere, and it was taking a few cranks to get fuel to the engine again. They suggested primimg the fuel with the pump and see what happens. I tried that and it started much easier, so I'll have to investigate where the leak is.

G'day GUGREAT you may have fixed the prob without even realising , by clearing fault codes in the E.C.U you can reset the parameters back to original settings as they can go out of range from time to time for no apparent reason and this may well have been the case for you (hopefully for your sake)another thing to check could be the wiring plug on the the accel pedal which sends the signal from the throtle position sensor (pedal)back to E.C.U they can become loose sending false signals back ,happy 3.0 litre ing hooroo.:driving:

Hi all,
my idle has settled down now. All I can think is that I checked for fault codes (only the 0505), then cleared the codes. After that the idle has been back to normal. perhaps that fixed it. If it happens again I'll let you know.

Just wondering how do you clear the codes and reset the ECU, ???

Problem back again.

Hi all,
Unfortunately my fast idle is back again, seems to come and go as it will suddenly return to normal for a few days, then suddenly go high again, so obviously I didn't fix it by clearing codes. I'll check the throttle sensor cable next.

Re clearing the codes, there is a post here on how to do it. you use a piece of wire to bridge two terminals on the diagnostic plug which is found under the panel under the steering wheel. There is a sequence to doing this so check for the post. My local library (Arana Hills QLD), has the Gregories manual for the patrol and I got the instructions and diagrams from there, showing which terminals to bridge etc. If you can't find the Post let me know and I will dig out the copy I made of the instructions and try to give a better description.

Cheers,
PJ.

The 05 05 code means there is no fault. At least none the ECU recognizes.
I would check the heat switch wiring. Also ground connections on the engine (driver side).
To clear fault codes, just insert wire link again after reading the codes without turning the ignition off. Leave connected for more than 2 seconds and then pull out.
Cheers
